Jesus walks among us, removing the yoke of sin that bends our backs and breaks our hearts. Suffering and sleeplessness may remain temporarily, but the burden of sin is no longer ours to carry. Jesus took that burden so we could know the kind of rest that seeps past our bones and into our weary souls.
Rest from Physical Labor
God has called us and designed us to rest from physical labor. In the Old Testament we see God's own pattern of working and then resting: And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done” (Genesis 2:7).
But why is rest important to God, and why do we need rest? Rest is one of the gifts that God gave us at the beginning of the creation account. He designed our bodies to need rest. Rest is when we recuperate, rejuvenate, and recenter so we can better serve Him.
God gives us the example of physical rest when he rested from creation (Genesis 2:1-3). Jesus, too, slept when he was in need of physical rest (Matthew 8:24).
