You may be able to breastfeed with cracked or bleeding nipples – but if this becomes too painful, you may need to stop breastfeeding and pump for a few days (or possibly longer) to let your nipples heal. Exclusive pumping is one way to give yourself a break.

High Vacuum May Cause Damage to Your Nipples and Breasts
While your friend may use the pump on the highest vacuum level with no problems, the same setting may not be right for you. Too high vacuum may cause pain and eventually may also cause damage to the delicate skin around your breast, areola and nipples.
If skin is especially dry or damaged, a small amount of purified natural wool-based emollient, also known as lanolin, may be applied to nipples and areolae. Lanolin supports moist wound healing.
Air-dry your nipples or dab them gently with a towel. Women used to be told to rub their nipples to toughen them up, but this isn't advised any more – thank goodness! There's no need to clean the breast or nipples before breastfeeding.
Cracked nipples most often result from chafing during sports and due to breastfeeding. Cracked nipples are characterized by red, irritated, and scabbed skin on or around the nipple. Using gentle creams and avoiding harsh soaps, chemicals, and tight clothing can help treat and prevent nipple cracking.
Can pumping decrease milk supply? Pumping itself does not decrease your breast milk supply. In fact, it can help boost it. But if you are having trouble with low milk supply, the first step is to check that you are using the right breast pump.
Your breast milk can also help your nipples heal with antibacterial protection. If you have a crack in your nipple or broken skin, squeeze out a few drops and gently rub over your nipple. Let your nipples air dry before covering with your bra or nursing pad.
Once your mature milk has come in, be sure to pump for at least 20 – 30 minutes per session (or until you no longer see milk expressing from your breasts). It's typically easier to tell when you're done with a nursing session – after all, your little one simply detaches and stops eating!

One lasting effect of breastfeeding is that your nipples might look droopy, or settle lower than they were before, after you stop breastfeeding. While you may not be entirely pleased with your new look, remember: You birthed and fed a baby! Your body is pretty cool, regardless of how it's changed.
Lanolin products should be avoided in people with a known allergy to wool. If you experience any increased skin irritation or pain, skin cracking, or bleeding after using lanolin cream, or your baby's mouth develops any sores or redness, you should discontinue using it.
Purified lanolin in nipple creams is safe for babies and does not need to be removed prior to nursing or pumping.
Lanolin oil is actually poisonous when ingested and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, rashes, and red skin. Lanolin has been found to contain traces of pesticides. It's commonly used as a treatment by breastfeeding mothers for sore nipples and these pesticides can be passed to the baby.
