Shellac polish can ruin your natural nails. Scraping and peeling off cured nail polish can physically remove the top layers of your nail bed. If the damage is already done, learn how you can repair broken, brittle, or flaky nails with all-natural ingredients.
“We always recommend our clients give their nails a break from shellac, especially if they have had multiple shellac manicures in a row,” Dunne says. “It gives your nails a chance to re-strengthen.”
It takes about three to six months for nails to grow out completely, erasing these white spots. Give your nails a break from gel to allow the nail plate time to recover. You can smooth and harden the nail during the process with a base coat that has a gelatin matrix.
The simple answer is your nails are dry causing peeling and brittle nails. Shellac cannot damage or weaken your nails once applied and removed correctly.
Cuticle oil helps to hydrate both the skin and nails, preventing dryness and in turn warding off splitting, chipping and peeling. 'Massaging an oil into the cuticles also helps to stimulate the area which encourages nail growth and strength. I like using Dadi' oil daily to keep nails moisturised and hydrated. '
While there is nothing wrong with shellac itself, it's the curing process that raises safety concerns. LED light lamps used to cure shellac emit UV rays, and extended exposure to UV rays can have potential side effects, including premature aging of the skin, age spots, and skin cancer.
“As long as there's no lifting [of the gel polish], let your nails grow and simply file down the lengths,” says CND brand ambassador Winnie Huang, who also encourages daily nail conditioning with a cuticle oil.
If you do want to do it at home, however, know that because shellac is a polish, it's easier to remove than gel and kinder to your nails as you don't have to buff your nail plate to 'break' the bond.
In the end, it all comes down to what you want. Both Shellac and dip nail powders have good and bad benefits. If you want to avoid the harmful UV rays, a dip nail is a good option for you. Consider the outcome you want to achieve, and it will be easier to decide.
Most salons only charge a small amount for shellac removal and use high-quality products that leave your nails in tiptop condition. Most salons use acetone with a 60% concentration or more.
You also need to be aware that if your shellac has lifted and it's not removed, moisture gets into the nail and this is this perfect environment for fungus to thrive.
Due to this difference in consistency, the removal process of a Shellac manicure easier and faster than that of a Gel manicure. Because Shellac polish is thinner on the nail, the removal process is quick, only taking 15 to 20 minutes using acetone.
The water will cause the shellac to turn white, or “blush.” If you have access to 95-to-100 percent pure propanol or isopropyl alcohol, you could use it for thinning without a problem. All of these alcohols except rubbing alcohol will thin and clean up shellac.
The acetone does not dissolve the shellac; it actually just loosens the polish so you can push it off easily. If any does not come off easily, take a fresh cotton pad soaked in acetone to rub it off.
CND Shellac vs OPI GelColor Curing Speed
If you were using a LED lamp GelColor would have an edge over Shellac in speed and how well it cured the coating. But if it was in a UV lamp they both will cure at pretty much the same speed but Shellac would have an edge as it's formula will cure better then GelColor's formula.
Shellac is much less damaging to nails than traditional gels (or acrylics), and if your goal isn't to make your nails longer, then they're a great choice. Shellac looks like a thick glossy gel polish, and the main benefit is that it reduces chipping.
Unfortunately, leaving your CND™ Shellac™ manicure on for too long can result in service breakdown; lifting, chipping, discolouration etc.
Because it is like a gel, however, it does add strength and durability. In the long term Shellac is much less damaging to nails than traditional Gels (or Acrylics). The main benefit is that it reduces chipping.

Manicures with shellac or gel nails use ultraviolet (UV) light to dry the polished nails. The issue here is that UV nail dryers expose people to UVA radiation — that is, the same harmful rays emitted by the sun, which have been linked to an increased risk of skin cancer.
Lipner says, “It's not dangerous to apply a dip powder every month. However, to remove these manicures, you need to put 100% acetone on your nails, which can damage your nails.” The acetone removes more than the nail color. “It peels off layers of nail and thins the nails over time,” says Dr.
