Later, Rip was found sleeping in a hay barn covered in blood. Instead of turning him in, John gave Rip a second chance at life. He took him in as a farmhand, and Rip became a part of the Dutton family.
Dutton asked him to confirm what he had heard, and afterward, he decided to give him a second chance. He was then adopted by John into his ranch. Rip soon became the ranch's foreman, leading the men in their work.
Being Chosen by John
John Dutton (Kevin Costner) adopted two boys when they were young: Rip and Jamie. The two have different roles in the Dutton family, but are both considered blood relatives to the head of the household.
Rip is the long time ranch foreman for the Dutton family ranch. He came to the ranch as a teenaged orphan and was adopted as a hand after he killed his abusive stepfather shortly after he brutally murdered the rest of his estranged family.
Eventually, Beth ended up popping the big question to Rip, asking him to marry her. Beth even made it much more romantic by presenting Rip with a simple ring. After learning that John had given them his blessings, Rip accepted Beth's proposal.
While she is scared that it may damage her relationship with Rip, Beth does tell him about her being sterile.
The third season episode titled 'Cowboys and Dreamers' shows how Beth was about fifteen years old when she became pregnant. Beth was hooking up with Rip at that time and it is implied that the baby was his. She wasn't very sure of how her father would react so she reaches out to her brother, Jamie, for help.
Those are two men who like I just said there's brotherly love and there's competition to an extent and they fight it out like two bulls, and they move on. That's it. That's just the way of life on a ranch, especially the Dutton ranch. There you have it!
But despite Beth's comment to Rip, they have both resisted becoming Carter's parental figures. In Yellowstone Season 4, Episode 3, "All I See Is You," Rip told Beth "He's not our son. No matter who he becomes, he never will be.
Beth, however, seems to be completely ignorant of Jamie's parentage. Her burning anger towards James ensures she uses every possible ammo to hurt him. If she indeed knew about his adoption, she would have used every chance to bring it up. Beth came to know about Jamie and his secret only in season 4.
He is Very Loyal to the Duttons
Thanks to the opportunity John gave him after the tragic deaths of his mother and brother, Rip has been a loyal ranch hand.
Don't worry, says Hauser. Things are good with Rip and Beth, who got married in an impromptu ceremony in the season four finale and who open season five playing their version of house. As part of last season's sweeping attack on the Dutton family, Rip's Yellowstone cabin was burned down.
In the Duttons' case, they protect their way of life and ranch through the easement, and keep their property whole, as John intends. The family can continue to live there, and the land can be sold or passed on to heirs.
Presumably the son of Jack and Elizabeth Dutton, this John Dutton is named after his father and grandfather and will one day inherit the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Who he marries is unknown, but together they have John Dutton IV, who then inherits the ranch into modern times.
Does Beth Cheat on Rip? No, Beth does not cheat on Rip. In season 4, we see Beth go to Walker for comfort after she and her father fight. Fans speculated there might be something between Beth and Walker, who has a rocky relationship with Rip.
Cole Hauser – $200,000 per episode
Cole Hauser (Rip Wheeler) joins a number of castmates (other than Costner) who reportedly $200,000 per episode and $2.8 million in Season 5.
And then I think Rip being kind of thrusted into being the foreman without John [Kevin Costner] around is a new experience for the character as well.” Viewers watched Rip and Kelly Reilly's Beth Dutton wed in the season 4 finale as her dad, John, prepared to take on the role of governor of Montana.
Since Beth now has a husband and still can't have kids, she's essentially adopted Carter, who reminds them both of a young Rip. But when Carter calls her mom, she practically tears his head off, sending poor Carter, a kid desperately in need of love, away crying.
How old are Beth and Rip? Many fans assumed they were in their 40s. But close watchers of the series point out that Beth admits she is 34 in Season 2. And based on the flashback scenes that show the two of them as teenagers, Rip seems to be around the same age as Beth.
Beth's rivalry with brother Jamie (Wes Bentley) is another matter entirely. From Yellowstone's first episode, her sheer contempt for Jamie was apparent, and she bullied and belittled him at every opportunity. It was eventually revealed in Yellowstone season 3 that when she was a teenager, she became pregnant by Rip.
She adopted a son (Carter) after finally marrying Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) in season four. Rip and Beth have always had a rocky, toxic relationship. Now, tasked with the immense responsibilities of being parents for the first time, many audience members feel like they are failing, and badly.
