Helps eliminate bad breath - Whether you are plagued by chronic bad breath (referred to as halitosis) or the occasional bout of malodor, scaling can significantly improve the problem by getting rid of its source. Many people mistakenly believe bad breath is caused by the foods they eat, but this is not always the case.
Dental scaling and polishing is the most effective halitosis treatment, the process eliminates embarrassing bad breath by removing plaque and tartar from below the gum-line, the most common cause of bad breath.
If you still have bad breath after a dental deep cleaning, your halitosis may be a sign of something other than gum disease, such as stomach problems like acid reflux disease or sinus problems.
A proper dental cleaning can improve your breath drastically. We will remove unnecessary bacteria and plaque build-up that may be contributing to unpleasant odors. Not only will a dental cleaning in our Fairborn dental office improve your breath, but it will also improve your overall dental health.
Your dentist will likely smell both the breath from your mouth and the breath from your nose and rate the odor on a scale. Because the back of the tongue is most often the source of the smell, your dentist may also scrape it and rate its odor.
Or you may be referred to an oral specialist--in most cases, a periodontist. A periodontal cleaning often helps to remove the bacteria and tartar or plaque that has built up and is causing inflammation at the gumline. Your dentist or periodontist may recommend an antimicrobial mouth rinse.
Minor bleeding and swelling may occur, but this should subside after a few days. Other risks include issues with gum reattachment, gum recession, or nerve damage. These side effects are rare, and most patients have no issues after their treatment. The most common side effect is pain and sensitivity after the procedure.
Avoid any chewing until the numbness has completely worn off. Wait at least two hours before eating, and then select a soft diet for the first 48-72 hours, chewing on the opposite side of your mouth. Avoid alcoholic drinks and hot or spicy foods until your gums are healed.
Manual scalers are designed to scrape accumulated plaque and tartar off of your teeth. Because it is done manually it cannot be performed as quickly as an ultrasonic scaler. Manual scalers are also not as effective when cleaning away built-up plaque and tartar.
Halitosis is caused by sulphur-producing bacteria in the tongue and throat. The major causes include a dry mouth caused by certain foods, smoking, poor oral hygiene and a coated tongue. The treatment of halitosis will depend on the underlying cause.
Bacterial Infection
Bad breath after a tooth extraction is sometimes caused by bacteria infecting the wound left by the extracted tooth. Many forms of oral bacteria create foul-smelling chemicals that are carried out of your mouth by your breath.
Mouth infections can cause bad breath. However, if your dentist has ruled out other causes and you brush and floss every day, your bad breath could be the result of another problem, such as a sinus condition, gastric reflux, diabetes, liver or kidney disease. In this case, see your healthcare provider.
After scaling and root planing there will be some discomfort or soreness in the gums. Our hygienist will recommend that you use an antiseptic mouthwash or simply warm, salty water to swish around your mouth when you get home and avoid eating hard foods immediately after.
Rinse your mouth with Chlorohexidine, an antibiotic mouthwash, twice daily after brushing your teeth in the morning and at night. Rinse your mouth with Chlorohexidine for 30 seconds each time. Do NOT rinse your mouth with water after rinsing with this medication.

The disadvantages of deep cleaning teeth include nerve damage and potential infections if you have a compromised immune system. The cleaning might cause pain, and sensitivity in the treatment doesn't guarantee reattachment of your gums to the teeth. The cleaning might even cause further gum recession.
Most patients recover from a dental scaling and root planing procedure within three to five days.
After scaling and root planing is completed, you may experience slight discomfort around the teeth for several days and increased sensitivity to hot and cold (and sometimes sweets) for up to four to six weeks duration. This is a normal course of healing.
Plaque formation on the teeth is a continuous process. If this is not removed by brushing it starts mineralizing into tartar within 10-14 hours. Such persons may require periodic scaling, every 6 months or so. The golden rule is to have a routine dental check up every 6 months.
Tooth Scaling and Root Planing. If you develop a severe gum disease called periodontitis, you may need tooth scaling and root planing to remove tartar and treat inflamed gums. These deep-cleaning procedures chip off tartar that hardens to the surfaces of your teeth and roots.
With a build-up of plaque and tartar and no professional cleaning to help you clean it off your teeth, cavities and gingivitis will begin to form. You will also develop bad breath.
