Fluids are all foods and drinks that are liquid at room temperature. All drinks, Jello, ice cream, sherbet, popsicles, water ice, ice cubes, soup, custard, pudding, sauces and gravies count as fluids. Why should I limit my fluids each day? It can help you avoid shortness of breath or swelling in your hands and feet.
In addition to beverages, many foods provide fluids. Examples include ice cream, yogurt, gelatin, pudding, soups, sauces, and juicy fruits.
Remember that other fluids like milk, coffee, tea and juice also count towards your daily fluid intake.
A “Free Water” or “Free Fluid” restriction is a restriction on water only. No water pitcher is left in the room and no water is given on the tray or with meals. All other fluids are not restricted – coffee, juice, tea, etc. may be given without limit.
For example, many fruits and vegetables, such as watermelon and spinach, are almost 100% water by weight. In addition, beverages such as milk, juice and herbal teas are composed mostly of water. Even caffeinated drinks — such as coffee and soda — can contribute to your daily water intake.
Milk is approximately 87 percent water and 13 percent solids.
Milk is more hydrating than water
For example, milk was found to be even more hydrating than plain water because it contains the sugar lactose, some protein and some fat, all of which help to slow the emptying of fluid from the stomach and keep hydration happening over a longer period.
Juice, smoothies, iced coffee, ice tea, protein shakes, milk, and other drinks can be excellent alternatives to water. You should avoid relying too much on drinks with a high sugar content, such as soda, certain fruit juces, energy drinks and chocolate milk.

The Dairy Group includes fluid milks, soymilk, cheeses, yogurt, and other foods that contain these dairy products, such as milk-based meal replacements, ice cream, and other frozen desserts. Other plant-based “milks” such as almond milk and rice drinks are currently not included in the Dairy group.
The yogurt has a characteristic of non-Newtonian fluids that shows different viscosity when a different shear rate is provided. Because of this non-Newtonian fluids, the sample fluid's viscosity is not constant and is therefore difficult to measure. Generally speaking, viscosity is associated only with liquid.
Fruits and vegetables can help with hydration [a banana is 74% water!] and provide healthful nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein. So for elite athletes – or those just trying to stay fit – a diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, including bananas, is important for performing at your best!
We can get fluid from several sources such as water and other drinks (teas, coffee, fruit juice, squash and milk) as well as the foods we eat.
The fastest way to hydrate is with an oral rehydration solution. These products are packed with electrolytes which are minerals found in your body that balance fluid levels and maintain optimal hydration. While you can hydrate fast with regular water, focus on electrolytes.
TAMPA (WFLA/CNN) — As refreshing as water is, it may not be the most hydrating drink choice. In fact, water may not even crack the top five of the most hydrating drinks out there. According to a study from Scotland's St. Andrew's University, milk, Pedialyte and soda top the list of most hydrating beverages.
Dairy milk can absolutely be a nutritious part of any hydration and healthy diet plan. It's important to note, however, that given its calorie content and high satiety, it should not be used to replace water by any means.
