Contractions: Throughout the second half of your pregnancy you may have noticed your abdomen getting hard, then soft again, or you may feel like the baby is “balling up”. These irregular contractions may increase in frequency and intensity as your due date approaches. They may become very uncomfortable or even painful.
If you put your hand on your abdomen, you'll feel it getting harder; when the muscles relax, the pain fades and you will feel the hardness ease. The contractions are pushing your baby down and opening the entrance to your womb (the cervix), ready for your baby to go through.

How Do You Feel 24 Hours Before Labor? Some of the most common things women experience when labor is 24 hours away are cramps and contractions. You might feel that your stomach is becoming tight and may experience discomfort in your lower back. Along with that, you might also experience cramps in your pelvic area.
In the days before labour starts, you might notice some subtle signs. It can be hard to tell them apart from your normal pregnancy discomforts. You might notice a change in the discharge from your vagina or a few cramps in your abdomen. You may have a low, dull ache in your back that can come and go.
Contractions are the name of the game at this late stage. You'll feel your belly hardening throughout the day—especially when you've been physically active. Symptoms not to ignore when you're 36 weeks pregnant
You have a persistent headache or visual disturbance. If your feet/ankles/hands or face are unusually swollen. You experience vaginal bleeding. You have an unusual coloured discharge.
You may feel like you're having strong menstrual cramps, stomach upset or lower abdominal pressure. You could also have pain in your lower back that radiates down into the legs. This pain won't go away if you change positions.

There are no signs that your water is going to break; however, most people will be in labor and have contractions before their water breaks. So, if you're in labor and experiencing contractions, your water can break at any moment.
Causes of stomach tightening during each trimester of pregnancy. Abdominal tightening can be a sign of the uterus stretching, gas, or pregnancy loss, depending on the stage of pregnancy. In the third trimester, Braxton Hicks contractions or labor can cause feelings of tightness.

Towards the end of pregnancy, a hard abdomen is usually a symptom of preterm labor, which indicates that labor is about to begin. Braxton-Hicks contractions are characterized by the fact that they are not painful, but regular and last about 30 seconds. They occur several times a day.
Fatigue. Lightning crotch pain (sharp, burning or shooting nerve pain in your pelvis caused by your baby's position). Loose stools or diarrhea. Sudden burst of energy (which Dr. Emery says is often associated with nesting, or the strong desire to get your home ready for baby).
