Scented natural oils
Natural oils are one of the best and most natural ways to keep your hair smelling good. After you shower, just apply a drop or two to the palm of your hand and go over your hair. Coconut oil and lavender oil will leave your hair smelling great and moisturized.
"The trick to getting your hair to smell like your favorite shampoo? Use the conditioner and styling products from the same line, with the same scent. This seals in the fragrance until the next washing. Another option is hair perfume—many brands have created these using their signature fragrance.
Outside smells are able to penetrate your strands because your hair is lacking the protective oil that once wrapped around its outer layer. So, find a substitute. A finishing serum or styling oil applied to dry hair can create a similar shield, keeping the stink (and other environmental aggressors) at bay.
In short, the answer is no – you shouldn't spray perfume (such as an Eau de Toilette or Eau de Parfum) directly into your lovely locks. If you do, you could be doing more damage to your hair than good!
Over/Under-Washing
If you've been skipping out on your wash days and relying on dry shampoo to tide you over, that could be one reason why your hair smells. The buildup of sebum, dead skin cells, sweat, and product residues marinate your roots, making it the ideal environment for bacteria to proliferate.
Hair traps moisture, Lamb said, meaning that built-up bacteria on unwashed scalps can start to pick up a mildewy or sour smell after several days or a week, especially if exercise is involved. “If you run five miles a day, you can't go three months without washing your hair,” said Lamb.
Why does it happen? It takes a lot of time for your hair to dry during monsoon, and the humidity makes your hair secrete more oil than necessary. The oil and damp hair traps in dirt, pollutants, smoke, and many different odours from the environment – making your head a hotspot for foul smell.
