The technical name for this is monoamniotic twins. They're often called MoMo twins. Identical twins happen in around 1 in 250 pregnancies in Australia. Although identical twins have the same genes, they don't always look the same.
Everyone has the same chance of having identical twins: about 1 in 250. Identical twins do not run in families. But there are some factors that make having non-identical twins more likely: non-identical twins are more common in some ethnic groups, with the highest rate among Nigerians and the lowest among Japanese.

Monoamniotic-monochorionic Twins
This is the rarest type of twin, and it means a riskier pregnancy as the babies can get tangled in their own umbilical cords. If you have monoamniotic-monochorionic twins, your healthcare provider will monitor your pregnancy closely.
Identical (i.e., monozygotic, or MZ) twins share 100 percent of their genes, whereas fraternal (i.e., dizygotic, or DZ) twins generally share only 50 percent of their genes.
In pregnancies with one placenta and two amniotic sacs, you will definitely have identical twins. Additionally, when your babies share a placenta, there is a greater risk for complications, such as twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome.
High parity – Having one or more previous pregnancies, especially a multiple pregnancy, increases the chances of having multiples. Race – African-American women are more likely to have twins than any other race. Asian and Native Americans have the lowest twinning rates.

Remember, monozygotic (identical) twins don't run in families—they are random. You may not know if your great-granduncles were identical or not and often there is no way to know for sure without DNA testing.
What is the likelihood of having more than one set of twins? If existing twins are identical the chance of having another set is the same as most women, about 1 in 250. If the twins are non- identical the chances of having twins again are much higher.
Miscarriage in early pregnancy is very common, and sadly, the risk is slightly higher with twin pregnancies. With an identical twin pregnancy, where each baby shares the placenta or sac, there is a further increase of risk.
And, while our bond has always invited bemused and inquisitive looks from bystanders, to me, it's entirely unsurprising that identical twins tend to have closer relationships than those between other siblings.
