Skywalker hid his lightsaber inside R2-D2's dome for the mission to rescue Captain Solo from Jabba the Hutt's palace. When he was about to be executed in the Great Pit of Carkoon, he gave the signal to R2-D2 and the astromech droid returned the lightsaber to Skywalker.
Luke has no interest in killing anyone. He just wants his friend back. As a show of good faith, he didn't plan an ambush nor a betrayal like Leia did. Despite Jabba's bad faith, Luke still offered him an out on the skiff before he finally gave the cue to R2D2 to give him the lightsaber.

Eventually, Rey was able to repair the lightsaber in 35 ABY. To do so, Rey bound the two broken halves together with a leather strap and used healing techniques she gleaned from the sacred Jedi texts to restore its broken kyber crystal.
