While Soldier Boys' death isn't shown on the page, it's later revealed that he was killed by Butcher - assumably in a horrifying fashion. Up until that point in the comic book series, Butcher had already lived up to his real last name with how many Supes he slaughtered.
It turns out that the time he spent with the Russians didn't kill him, it made him stronger, and they gave him the power of energy blasts that don't just kill people, they apparently nullify the powers of super people, too.
Make no mistake, Homelander is more powerful than Soldier Boy, but can he take him out in a fight? We don't think so. Besides, unlike Homelander, who probably wants all the credit for himself, Soldier Boy isn't above asking for help.

The grand finale of The Boys comic book series confirms that there is only one hero who is actually stronger than Homelander, and that's his (even more) evil clone, Black Noir. Created to be an upgraded version of Homelander, Black Noir proves his superiority in the final battle between these two deranged powerhouses.
"Mother's" Milk, primarily known as MM, is depicted as a regular human (though still a military veteran) with a dislike of Vought and its Supes resulting from a car crash caused by Soldier Boy in MM's youth, which killed his mother, uncle, and grandfather, and led to his father working himself to death as a lawyer ...
Just like the other supes, Black Noir was tired of Soldier Boy's abuse, but the turning point came via an offer from Stan Edgar. In another flashback, we learn that Edgar asked Black Noir to make Soldier Boy “fade away” as Vought scientist Jonah Vogelbaum had a “replacement” for him.
However, Noir's fear of Soldier Boy is surprisingly bigger than his loyalty to Homelander. When Noir escaped from Vought due to the news of Soldier Boy returning, Homelander was genuinely distraught over the news as he believed Noir always had his back.

As a result, he gained strength and enhanced reflexes, as well as a healing factor that allows him to keep fighting even after sustaining injuries that would take down a normal human. He's not, however, immortal or totally immune to harm.
