The Soviets, having opened a stable gate to the Upside Down with experimental technology on June 28, 1985, apparently used the gate to extract various '
How did the Russians know about the Upside Down? Was their discovery accidental? Based on the show's timeline, the Russian scientists had a version of their machine built by about seven months after Eleven accidentally opened the Gate inside Hawkins National Lab (HNL).
The Demodogs, from Stranger Things season 2 and the Demogorgon all were most likely captured with the gate the Russians opened beneath Starcourt Mall.
Publication history. Mind flayers were created by Gary Gygax, who has said that one of his inspirations for them was the cover painting of the Titus Crow book The Burrowers Beneath by Brian Lumley.
Stranger Things season 4 reveals that Henry Creel aka One aka Vecna created the Mind Flayer when he was banished to the Upside Down in 1979.
The truth about the Mind Flayer
Using his powers, he was able to control it and use it to do his bidding. With this reveal you find out that 001 is the ultimate monster in all of this and that the events of Stranger Things Season 4 have opened up a new supersized portal between the dimensions.
He's a kid with a lot of emotions that he never learned how to express with words or say something as vulnerable as "I love you", and thus expresses his feelings with actions instead. The difference between Eleven and Mike is clear.
The Russians then discovered that location was vital and that the gate was once opened before in Hawkins, IN, thus building a secret base beneath Starcourt Mall. Alexei reveals that the gate is opening. (And, as we see, allowing the Mind Flayer to invade Hawkins.)
Dart is from the same species as the original Demogorgon, albeit in an adolescent form, referred to as a "Demodog" by Dustin.
The creatures were transported to a prison camp in the Kamchatka Peninsula. One specimen was either fully-grown upon capture, or was allowed to fully mature. The Soviets occasionally executed prisoners by feeding them to the creature, helping it grow stronger in the process.
Then, the origins of the hive mind became clear. Volume 2 brought the revelation that Vecna was actually in charge of the Upside Down and had been since Eleven banished him there in 1979.
In the days that followed, the Soviets were able to acquire creatures and genetic material from the Upside Down; they even captured a fragment of the Mind Flayer and a pack of Demodogs, which were incapacitated and shipped to a facility in the Kamchatka Peninsula.
In episode 7, Vecna is revealed to be Henry Creel (played as a youngster by Raphael Luce), the son of Victor Creel (Robert Englund) and his wife Virginia (Tyner Rushing) shown in the 1950s flashbacks.
I saw a means to realize my potential, to transcend my human form, to become the predator I was always born to be. Vecna reached out to the Mind Flayer, seemingly using his powers to reshape it into the spider-legged monster he had doodled as a child.
Eleven has a memory during this episode and realizes that 001/Henry Creel (Jamie Campbell Bower) wants her to join him on his evil journey, and she banished him to the Upside Down. 001 then transformed into Vecna, the horrifying Stranger Things villain.
The short answer is: Germany was forced to give up huge patches of its conquered land at the end of WWII. In 1945 the Potsdam Agreement was signed by the USSR (now Russia), Britain and the USA. It specifically gave Kaliningrad (known as the German Königsberg at the time) to Russia, without opposition.
This would also explain why the Upside Down is based on Hawkins only. Unfortunately, viewers are going to have to wait until at least 2024 for all of their Stranger Things questions to be answered.

After defeating the Mind Flayer, the two are reunited, sharing a hug. With Hopper's death, Eleven has to move with the Byers. While packing, Mike excitedly talks about the two getting to see each other. Eleven brings up that she did hear Mike confess his feelings for her, she tells him that she loves him too.
“There's an effort there that Mike and Eleven, because they're so in love, and they love each other so much, and they've gone through so much together,” explained Finn. “That's what's so beautiful about [it].
In 4th edition, the Open Grave book shows the leader of the cult of Vecna is a lich named Mauthereign.
Next up, the viewers go on to theorise that One/Vecna is actually Eleven's dad. Yep, told you it was wild. The theory claims that Brenner wanted to create a child with stronger powers, so he waited until One was old enough to become a father.
They are connected because Will was the first victim. That's it. Eleven is Vecna's true foil, an anti-Vecna, if you will. We learned a lot about Eleven's connection to Vecna and how their brutal fight in Hawkins Lab manifested the Upside Down.
