Korean Slang and Text Shorthand for “Thank You” in Korean
Sometimes, Korean will say the English “thank you” in Korean — it's 땡큐 (ttaengkyu). You can also say 감사 (gamsa), the shortened form of gamsahamnida) to say “thank you” in Korean.
2. Kamsahamnida (감사합니다) – “Thank you”
For example, if somebody says “thank you for coming,” you can say “thank you for inviting me” (초대해 주셔서 감사합니다 | chodaehae jusyeoseo gamsahamnida). If you only want to learn one way how to say “you're welcome” in Korean, then learn the word 아니에요 (anieyo). Remember, voice tone is very important when saying this word.
아니요 (aniyo)
This is the most basic form of saying “no” and can be used by itself. Some alternate spellings that you might see are 아니오 (anio) and 아뇨 (anyo).
감사합니다 (gam-sa-ham-ni-da) — Formal and Polite. This is the most commonly used phrase for saying thank you. You can't go wrong using it with just about anyone.
1) 오빠 (oppa)
오빠 (oppa) means older brother and can only be used by younger women. A woman might call her older brother or an older male friend 오빠 (oppa). It literally translates to “older brother” and is used in close relationships.
하이(ha-i) is literally 'hi' in Korean. You may have noticed that the pronunciation of 하이 (ha-i) sounds like the English word 'hi' but said with a Korean accent. Korean's will often take English words and use them as if they are Korean words. Using 하이(ha-i) like this is super casual and very cute.
Just like in Japan, in Korea people bow as a sign of respect, especially between people they don't know or work colleagues.
사랑해요 (saranghaeyo) is a respectful way to say “I love you”. Because it's respectful, this phrase often said to parents. In this type of situation, you're not only saying “I love you”, but you're also expressing gratitude for all they do.
This is your most common way to greet someone in Korean. It's the familiar, polite speech pattern. You use 하세요 (haseyo) to show a bit of extra respect. 하세요 comes from the verb 하다 (hada), which means “to do.” It's a good phrase for almost all situations, especially if you're unsure what level of formality to use.
How to say “Dad” in Korean. The word 아빠 (appa) has a similar meaning to “dad” in English. This should only be used to refer to your own dad.
The words oppa (오빠) and hyung (형) mean “older brother.” Meanwhile, the Korean words nuna (누나) and unnie (언니) mean “older sister.”
The Korean word hyung has the same meaning as oppa above. It is also used to address an older brother or male friend. The key difference is that oppa is only used by girls, while hyung is only used by boys. Korean guys in the company of older males refer to their older brothers as Hyung (형).
Finish your meal only once the oldest person has finished with their meals, and try your hardest to finish everything in your bowl or plate. The timing of the meal entirely revolves around rank, so you're not off the hook after you let the eldest guests start eating first.
잘 자 (jal ja) is an informal way of saying “good night” in Korean and literally means sleep well or sleep tight. It is made up of two words i.e. 잘 (jal) means “well” and 자 is from the basic form 자다 (jada) means “to sleep”. You can typically use it with close friends or people who are younger than you.
Instead, they wait for at least 30 minutes before brushing. While many Koreans do brush their teeth after breakfast, there is also a significant number who do not.
To ask “Are you OK?” in formal Korean, you can say 괜찮습니까? (gwaenchanseumnikka?).
2. 이름이 뭐예요? (ireumi mwoeyo?) This is a common and less formal way of saying “What is your name?” You can safely use this phrase with people you meet for the first time, as it is still formal enough to be and sound respectful.
