Duplex ultrasonography is an imaging test that uses sound waves to look at the flow of blood in the veins. It can detect blockages or blood clots in the deep veins. It is the standard imaging test to diagnose DVT. A D-dimer blood test measures a substance in the blood that is released when a clot breaks up.
Blood tests can show if there is abnormal blood clotting activity in the body. They can also show if the heart has been damaged by a clot.
This evaluation, known as Homan's Test, consists of laying flat on your back and extending the knee in the suspected leg. Have a friend or family member raise the extended leg to 10 degrees, then have them squeeze the calf. If there's deep pain in the calf, it may be indicative of DVT.
Doctors may use a CT angiography test to check for clots in the head, neck, chest, or abdomen. The test involves the injection of a contrast material into the blood and computer imaging to show blood flow and reveal any clots.
Blood clots do not show up on an X-ray, but it can see other things such as fluid or pneumonia on the lungs that can explain your symptoms.

Typically, your provider will ask about your current symptoms, family medical history and risk factors for clots. They will examine your extremities (arms and legs) for swelling and look for tenderness and skin discoloration. If your provider suspects a clot, they may do certain blood tests or imaging tests.
Small blood clots in the calf can sometimes go undetected for several days or weeks, especially if they don't show any symptoms. If left untreated, however, DVT can travel up the veins in the leg to the lungs or other major organs in the body, leading to a potentially fatal pulmonary embolism or similar complication.
If you are diagnosed with a deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot in one of your deep veins, you may assume that you need to be treated in the hospital. But that's not always the case. In fact, research even shows that in some cases, treatment at home may be more successful than in-hospital treatment.
Signs that you may have a blood clot

Blood clots usually dissolve on their own. If not, the clots can potentially lead to life-threatening situations. There are two main types of blood clots: thrombus (clot does not move) and embolus (clot breaks loose and moves). If the clot is immobile, it generally won't harm you.
If you think you have a blood clot, call your doctor or go to the emergency room right away! Blood clots can be dangerous. Blood clots that form in the veins in your legs, arms, and groin can break loose and move to other parts of your body, including your lungs.
Does blood clot pain come and go? Unlike the pain from a charley horse that usually goes away after stretching or with rest, the pain from a blood clot does not go away and usually gets worse with time.

CT scans detect and diagnose blood clots by providing detailed, accurate imagery of the body's blood vessels and their obstructions. Doctors generally use two CT scan techniques for blood clot detection and diagnosis — CT venography and CT pulmonary angiography.
