The following six remedies from experts are especially helpful for ditching dull-looking locks and ensuring your hair looks its healthiest, no matter what.
There are four primary factors that cause frizz: the environment, diameter of the hair fiber itself, level of curl, and the amount of damage. Avoid long and hot showers, excess exfoliation, and hot tools like traditional hairdryers and flat irons to prevent frizz.
Use a hydrating conditioner with keratin, protein and/or natural oils. Natural oils are better than synthetic because they are absorbed into hair, and protein-infused conditioners will manage frizz and create shine.
Here are a few of the most common culprits of frizzy hair: Dryness and dehydration causing your hair to absorb excess moisture. Curly and wavy hair is more prone to dryness, which means it's more prone to frizz. When your hair is dry, frizz can happen when it absorbs moisture from the environment.
Ceramic brushes are most commonly used at the salon, while brushes with wooden bristles will prove helpful to tame frizz and improve shine. “Depending on the finish you have in mind, you can opt for a flat brush for smooth straight hair or a rounded brush to create volume and movement in the hair,” says Savla.
Essentially, the buildup of frizzy hair is a strong sign that the ends of your hair are becoming unhealthy, and in most cases, you should look at getting a trim from your local hair salon.
What are the signs of healthy hair? Healthy hair strands have a sheen and a luster, little breakage, minimal shedding, are moisture rich (so not dry), reflect light, do not break when brushed, and do not contain dandruff.
Most hairstylists recommend against using products with sulphates, as they can dry out hair further. Instead, look for bottles with argan oil, coconut oil and shea butter on the ingredient list. A simple trick is to rinse your conditioner off with cold water—it helps lock the moisture in and seal the cuticle.
“I use the Extra Shine Spray — this is my little secret,” Appleton spilled. “I saturate the shine spray all over the hair and then I use a flattening iron.” He recommends pulling a comb through each strand with the straightener to help “separate it” and keep things “smooth.”
Natural oil whether it is coconut or almond oil is the perfect solution to nourishing your hair and adding that shine. Hot oil treatment enriches your hair, promotes growth, repairs split ends, strengthens brittle hair and prevents any more hair damage.
The hair's outermost layer is called the cuticle. The cuticle becomes raised in attempt to absorb moisture from the air. Dry, porous hair has a raised cuticle, which causes it to lack shine and look frizzy. An easy way to seal the cuticle is “to rinse with cold water, and blow dry properly,” says Murphy.
Irrespective of your hair texture, avoid excessive heat styling, chemical dyes and harsh hair care products. Use conditioning treatments from oils to aloe vera to deep conditioners to improve your hair texture over time.
