End-to-end encryption means that only the sender and recipient can read the messages, and even Facebook cannot access them. Secret conversations can only be accessed on the device they were initiated from, and they are not visible on any other device that you use to access Messenger.
Follow a few steps to view deleted secret conversations in Messenger: Access the device of the person whose conversations you want to read and open Facebook Messenger. Find and select Recent conversations. Use the search tool to find the conversation archived earlier.
A filled-in blue circle next to your message means that your message was delivered. And, when a friend has read your message, a small version of your friend's photo will appear next to your message. Mary Straub and 20,053 others like this.
Secret conversations are protected with end-to-end encryption, meaning that no one outside the chat – not even Facebook – can read what's in the chat. Quick tip: Secret conversations are similar to Vanish Mode, another Messenger feature that prioritizes secret and secure conversations.
You could, for example, write “Anonymous” or “Secret” as the sender. It does not matter if you've been blocked on Facebook Messenger or anywhere else.
If you send a message to someone and they don't read it within 14 days, the message will automatically disappear from the chat. From Chats, tap on the secret conversation. At the top of your chat, tap the person's name or the group chat name. Tap Disappearing Messages.
You can recover deleted messages from Facebook Messenger by downloading them or checking old email notifications. You can also recover them by looking in the cache of the Messenger app, if you use Android. You can also check your archived messages or ask the person you were messaging with for a copy.
Vanish mode lets users exchange temporary messages between two people (not group chats). After a Messenger or Instagram user turns on the vanish mode, it is only active for them. The other person in the conversation needs to enable vanish mode manually.
You can also tell if someone is on Messenger by looking at the time stamp next to their name. If you see a time stamp that says 'active now,' it means they are currently online. If you see a time stamp that says 'active today' or 'active yesterday,' it means they were recently active on Messenger.
Facebook doesn't let people track who views their profile. Third-party apps also can't provide this functionality. If you come across an app that claims to offer this ability, please report the app.
The bottom line is that there is no way someone can know you searched the conversation.
For additional security, the feature makes messages disappear after five seconds or up to a day—similar to Snapchat. Users might consider using Secret Conversations if they are sending sensitive information or have concerns about smartphone apps spying on their data.
Hiding someone is not the same as blocking them. People you hide will not be notified and you will still be able to search for and chat with them. To unhide someone, visit Hidden contacts in your Messenger privacy settings. Note: For the best experience hiding contacts, update your Messenger app to the latest version.
Your messages are encrypted whether or not you compare keys. Every device in an end-to-end encrypted chat has a special key that's used to protect the conversation. For example, if you access the chat from both your computer and your phone, each of these devices will have its own special key.
Secret Conversations may also be enabled or disabled automatically. When a user logs into a compatible version of Messenger, the new device gets enabled for use with Secret Con- versations. Facebook disables devices after they have been offline for a period of at least 30 days.
When you turn on vanish mode in a specific chat, only the other user in that chat will know that you've entered vanish mode. That user will receive a notification when you turn vanish mode on and when you turn it off. But, no one else will know that you've changed the settings of that conversation one way or another.
Instagram vanish mode protects you in case bad actors were to hack into your account—or someone else snoops around on your phone. It allows you to erase the details of a private chat after the convo is over, which offers a bit of freedom and safety.
Vanish Mode is perfect for you if you're worried about snoopers looking through your chats. If safety and privacy are important to you (as we're sure they are), then you should take advantage of the feature. You can also use Vanish Mode if you want to have a private chat with another Instagram user.
