What do I do if my fillers migrate? If you think your fillers have migrated or you have had a bad filler experience, Dr. Kirby and her injection professionals are able to use hyaluronidase to reverse HA-based fillers.
Patients should make sure to follow appropriate aftercare instructions after lip filler procedure to reduce risk of migration as well. For example, it's important to avoid pursing the lips for the first 48 hours following filler application. This means avoiding actions such as smoking and drinking through straws.
"Theoretically, all filler has the ability to migrate," says Dr. Diamond. "That is why it is so imperative that non-surgical injectable services are performed by experts with the anatomical knowledge to prevent this from happening.
Frank says the best way to deal with migration is to dissolve the filler with hyaluronidase (an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid gels). In just a few hours, hyaluronidase softens the filler and returns the lips to a more natural shape, projection, and size.
Filler Massage
The product will remain somewhat malleable for about a month after it has been injected. If you think that your filler has migrated to unwanted areas or isn?t as smooth as you? d like, massage is always an option.
Firstly, migration can occur if a client has their filler done by an injector who is inexperienced and isn't aware of the structure of the skin. In this instance, sometimes too much filler can be placed in areas which it shouldn't be or by placing the filler too deep.
Although extremely rare, dermal fillers are able to migrate within the skin if consistent and adequate pressure is applied to them. For this reason, we advise patients not to get a facial, massage (on the treated skin), or microdermabrasion for the first two weeks following their filler injections.
Although hyaluronic acid fillers are noted to have higher rates of migration, it is important to note that all injectables have the potential to migrate and naturally have a small degree of displacement and tissue integration after treatment.
However, it must be stressed, however, that filler does not migrate from one area of the body to another. What being discussed on social media is simply so-called migration of a few millimeters within the same anatomical regions where it was injected.
“If the results of migration are too unsettling, the filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase.” An enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid gels, hyaluronidase can be injected to counteract any migrated hyaluronic acid-based fillers. This isn't a DIY situation though or something to be taken lightly.
Calcium hydroxylapatite is biosynthetically produced, which means that no animals or animal products are used. This lowers your risk of an allergic reaction and no skin testing is required. This type of dermal filler is known to produce a very natural result, doesn't migrate and side effects are rare.
The good news is fillers are only semi-permeant. Depending on how recently the filler was injected, the migration will last approximately 6-18 months. During that time your body will naturally metabolize and break the filler down over time if left alone.
Cheek filler migration, in particular, is the Spreading Of Fillers Outside The Cheek Area, thus causing long periods of pain and discomfort, swelling, and irritation around the eyes, nose, lips, jaw, and neck.
That said, these injectable treatments take some time to integrate into your tissues, and it's normal for your dermal filler to take up to two weeks to fully settle into your face.
This happens when the filler was injected too superficially. Patient may take notice to the uneven appearance several weeks post treatment or 3+ months post treatment when the body starts to slowly metabolize the filler. Additional areas that can be “botched” are cheekbones, chin, marionette lines, etc.
Massaging the treated areas can disrupt the dermal filler and cause the hyaluronic acid solution to move out of place. This can lead to an uneven or lumpy appearance.
We recommend patients get touch-up filler injections every 6-9 months to maintain full results, though some patients are happy with filler treatments every 9-12 months.
It it is very low are rare that dermal filler can move after injection, but I have certainly seen a few cases where the filler has migrated away from where it was injected. Best to follow the aftercare instructions to prevent product migration.
Avoid itching, massaging, or picking around the injection site. This is normal and generally disappears within a few hours to a few days.
Often dermal fillers can create unwanted aesthetic effects or complications. Thankfully, hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers can be reversed or dissolved by injecting the enzyme hyaluronidase into the previously injected filler. This enzyme catalyses the breakdown of hyaluronic acid.
In reality, 0.5ml can be too much too. There is no arbitrary amount of filler over which it is too much or under which it is too little. Too much filler injected close to the vermillion border can result in migration of the filler into the area above it.
After your dermal filler treatment, you should remain in an upright position for 3-4 hours and avoid rubbing or applying any pressure on the treated area. This will prevent the filler from migrating to other areas. The best sleeping positions following treatment limit facial movement and stress on the face.
If your lip fillers have migrated, it will almost always be noticeable visually. This can be presented in many ways; from a puffy upper lip, a lack of a defined border between the lip edge and above and/or below the lip border.
