Firmware updates are delivered automatically while your AirPods are charging and in Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad or Mac that's connected to Wi-Fi. You can also use your iPhone, iPad or Mac to check that your AirPods have the latest version.
Sadly, unlike iOS and macOS, there's no button or setting to force-update the AirPods. Apple automatically downloads and installs these software updates in the background. The company states that for this to work, the AirPods should be connected to a power source and in Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
If you're paired to your iPhone and no update seems to be happening, put your AirPods earbuds back in their charging case, connect it to a power source, and re-pair the device to force an update. As long as your iOS device firmware is up to date, it shouldn't have any issue pulling down your AirPods firmware update.
Keep the AirPods connected to the phone and make sure that the phone is connected to the Internet. Then put the AirPods in the charging case and cover it. Connect the charging case to the power cord to charge. In about 30-60 minutes, the AirPods version will be automatically upgraded.
And since there's no way to force AirPods or AirPods Pro updates manually, you will have to allow the automatic update process.
AirPods 3 are Apple's newest AirPods with more compact stem, redesigned contoured fit, Adaptive EQ, sweat resistance, spatial audio support, and more.
If you don't have an Apple device nearby, you can set up an appointment at an Apple Store or with an Apple Authorized Service Provider to update your firmware.
Wait 30 minutes for the firmware to update. The lid of the AirPods Charging Case needs to be closed during the entire process. If it's opened at any time, the update is interrupted and it starts over. After 30 minutes, reconnect the AirPods to the iOS, iPadOS, or macOS device.
AirPods typically last about 2-3 years before most users feel the need to replace them. This short lifespan is because of their lithium-ion batteries. AirPods have proven tough in several durability tests and have shown that they can withstand pressure.
Close the lid on the case and wait a few minutes. If there is a new update for your AirPod firmware, it will happen automatically within the next 30 minutes.
Make sure the Apple devices are up to date: Update your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch and Update macOS on Mac If you don't have access to an Apple device personally, borrow one from a family member or a friend. Ensure the AirPods are within Bluetooth range of the updated Apple device.
Look in Settings
Find your AirPods in the list (for example, "John's AirPods"). Tap the More Info button next to your AirPods, and you'll see the model number.
Update iPhone manually
At any time, you can check for and install software updates. Go to Settings > General > Software Update. The screen shows the currently installed version of iOS and whether an update is available. To turn off automatic updates, go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.

Put your AirPods in their charging case, and keep the lid open. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds until the status light on the front of the case flashes amber, then white.
If your AirPods won't reset and there's no amber light on the case, a dirty charging port or AirPod tail could be the reason behind it. Over time, lint and other debris can build up in the charging port or tail of your AirPods.
Direct from Apple Support (as of 04/15/2022): “The 4C170 version is indeed for the 3rd gen AirPods. 4C165 is for AirPods Max, AirPods Pro and AirPods (2nd generation).”
