People with a next to their names are active now on chat or Messenger. If you don't see next to a person's name, it means they have turned off their Active Status feature in their settings.
Are you looking for an active status of your friend or family member on Facebook Messenger? There are two scenarios at play here. First, the person isn't actively using Facebook Messenger. Secondly, the person may also have disabled active status for their Facebook account to keep prying eyes away.
When you turn Active Status off, you'll still appear active or recently active from any other places where you're using Facebook or Messenger unless you turn off Active Status in those places, too. To find out if someone has blocked you on Messenger, you should first send them a message. If your message is not delivered, even after the recipient has been online, you're most likely blocked. To tell if your message isn't delivered, it will have an empty circle with a check mark for an icon.

If you don't see the error message, the only way to tell if someone is actively using Messenger is to look at their status bar. Even if they're on a different call, you may contact them to see if they are available. If they are, the smartphone will ring, and they can choose to pick it up or not.

Some people don't want to be constantly bothered with messages. They become active only when they want to.
Perhaps the most straightforward reason for not seeing someone's activity status is that they don't want you or anyone else to see it. This means the user disabled the “Last Active” setting, and there is no way to bypass this.
The person turned off their “Active Status”
This is the most common reason why you can't see when someone was last active on Facebook Messenger. Facebook has a privacy feature that allows you to hide your active status.
When you select "Friends" as a privacy setting, only those people with whom you are Facebook friends have access to the information. You can also hide posts and other information from certain people on your friend list.
If you do not want to show your Active Status, turn it off whenever you're using Messenger or Facebook. You won't see when your friends and connections are active, recently active and currently in the same chat as you in each place or app that you've turned off your Active Status for.

Look for empty space at the top of their profile.
If you've been restricted, you won't be able to see the private posts, hence the space here. Depending on when your friend made their public posts, you might not see a gap here even if you have been restricted.

If you turn on Show When You're Active Together: friends and contacts on Messenger will see when you're active in the same chat as them. If you turn off Show When You're Active Together and keep Active Status on: people won't see if you're active in the same chat, but will see if you're on Messenger.
The green dot indicates the person is either using the Facebook app or is on Messenger. The “Active” status is used in/for both apps. There's no way to know when someone is messaging another person other than yourself.
If you restrict someone: They won't be able to see when you're online or if you've read their messages. Their new comments on your posts will only be visible to that person, and you can choose to see the comment by tapping See comment.
The only thing in common between a restricted and blocked account is the activity status, as it will not be visible to either. Even when you can comment that will be visible to the user and you, it won't be possible for you to understand if you are being restricted.
