The first sign of breast development is slight swelling under the nipple, a stage of development called breast buds. As your breasts first start to grow, they can be very tender and sore. They may also itch as your skin gets stretched. Buying a first bra can help protect new breast growth and minimize pain.
Breast Development
Girls usually begin puberty between the ages of 8 and 13 years old. The earliest sign of puberty in most girls is the development of breast "buds," nickel-sized bumps under the nipple. It is not unusual for breast growth to start on one side before the other.
The development of breasts gets delayed if your diet is poor. The hormones required for the proper development of the body will not be released if the body is deficient in nutrition. The growth of breast get stunted if you are underweight or lack vitamins and minerals.
Hormone changes during the menstrual cycle may lead to breast swelling. More estrogen is made early in the cycle and it peaks just before mid-cycle. This causes the breast ducts to grow in size. The progesterone level peaks near the 21st day (in a 28-day cycle).
Hormonal Changes: Women develop their breasts during puberty as estrogen increases. Pregnancy and milk production can also cause the breasts to enlarge due to hormonal changes. Drug Use: Certain drugs can lead to enlarged breast tissue in both men and women.
We all have a different perception of size, but many women perceive their breasts to be smaller than average. Breasts that appear smaller can be caused by genetics, rapid weight loss, hormones, medical conditions, malnutrition, post pregnancy or a lack of breast tissue development.

Sleeping on your side without support is a no-no as well, because it causes your Cooper's ligaments to stretch, and as they stretch, your breasts will increasingly sag.
Weight loss or weight gain
A woman's weight can have a big influence on the shape and size of their breasts. Weight affects the amount of fatty tissue within the breasts. Gaining weight increases the fatty tissue within the breast and results in breasts enlargement.
Hypoplastic breasts, also called underdeveloped breasts, tubular breasts, or breasts with insufficient glandular tissue, may contain very little breast tissue that can produce breast milk. Hypoplastic breasts can be small, thin, shaped like tubes, or very uneven.
There are different causes but one specific condition that results in very little breast development is Poland's syndrome. Girls born with this have no breast buds, the small area of tissue usually present just under the nipple from which the breast grows during puberty.
Breast development in girls is considered delayed when breasts don't develop by age 13. The commonest cause of the delay is that it runs in families. Another common cause of delayed puberty in girls is lack of body fat. Being too thin can disrupt the normal process of puberty.
Breast size, or the amount of fatty tissue your breasts contain, does not affect these hormonal changes and therefore does not factor into milk production. Rest easy knowing that small cup size is no reason for concern. The amount of milk you produce is just a matter of supply and demand.
In a functional and aesthetic sense, the ideal breast size for a woman is generally considered to be one that's proportionate to their height, shoulder, and waist diameter. So, for women who measure 5'3, their breasts should complement the frame of their body and allow them to move freely without discomfort.
As females get older, their bodies start to produce less of the reproductive hormone estrogen than before. Estrogen stimulates the growth of breast tissue, while low levels of this hormone cause the mammary glands to shrink.
Technically, they don't. It's not age that makes your breast get bigger. It's weight gain—and people happen to gain weight as they age.
"If you don't wear a bra, your breasts will sag," says Dr. Ross. "If there's a lack of proper, long-term support, breast tissue will stretch and become saggy, regardless of breast size." Still, both experts agree that multiple factors play into if and when sagging (technical term: "ptosis") occurs, bra-wearing aside.
Stimulating, caressing or simply holding breasts sends nerve signals to the brain, which trigger the release of the 'cuddle hormone' called oxytocin, a neurochemical secreted by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland in the brain.
Hormonal fluctuations are the number one reason women have breast pain. Breasts become sore three to five days prior to the beginning of a menstrual period and stop hurting after it starts. This is due to a rise in estrogen and progesterone right before your period.
With age, a woman's breasts lose fat, tissue, and mammary glands. Many of these changes are due to the decrease in the body's production of estrogen that occurs at menopause. Without estrogen, the gland tissue shrinks, making the breasts smaller and less full.

A woman's breasts consist of fat, glandular tissue that gives way to milk production, and connective tissue. Genetics, weight, hormones, and menopause status can all impact breast size. Some factors like menstruation, pregnancy, and weight gain can cause temporary size fluctuations.
Far and away, genetics plays the biggest role in what determines breast size and shape. "Your genes also influence the levels of your hormones, which affect your breast tissue," says Richard Bleicher, M.D., a surgical oncologist and director of the Breast Fellowship Program at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.
