Baking soda is a great all-purpose cleaner that can eliminate tough odors, including stubborn ammonia-based smells. A little goes a long way too, so sprinkling a small amount on top should be enough to clear out those bad smells. Whatever deodorizer you use, make sure it's one that your cat likes as well.
Baking Soda
If you're still having odor problems, try sprinkling a little baking soda on the bottom of the box before you add fresh litter each week, or place an open box of baking soda in the same area as the box.
Covers or hoods trap odors. That's good for you, but less so for the cat who may not enjoy being trapped inside with the smell. Some litter-box hoods have a space to hold a charcoal filter, which may help keep odors down for both cat and human.
Note that while many people use scented litter or air freshener to mask litter box odors, these odors can be off-putting to cats. A thin layer of baking soda placed on the bottom of the box will help absorb odors without repelling your cat.
You should wear a mask when cleaning cat litter because wearing a mask will prevent the inhalation of airborne bacteria and germs from the litter. The germs, if inhaled, can cause respiratory problems, resulting in allergic reactions and respiratory diseases. To protect your lungs, wear a dust mask.
Most cat owners are familiar with clay and clumping litter. Remember: it's recommended that you ALWAYS wear a mask when scooping litter. As it's likely that dust will float around in the air. That's not something you want to inhale.
How often should you wash a litter box? Most cat parents wash the box every week. You don't need any special chemicals. Simple dish soap or vinegar and warm water will get the mess out.
Add baking soda to the litter: Surprisingly, baking soda is a great all-natural deodorizer that is both safe for cats and can help manage the litter box smell. By mixing a little bit of baking soda with the litter, you can help absorb any urine odors also.
When urea, the main component of urine, decomposes, the highly volatile ammonia is released, and as cats have higher levels of urea than dogs, or even humans, this is multiplied in the litter tray. Humans can detect ammonia at very small concentrations, and it has a particularly fishy smell.
Cats are fastidious creatures, which means they hate using a dirty litter box as much as you hate looking at one! If you have multiple cats in the house, you may run into even more issues with a dirty litter box.
You may have even heard that your cat can smell their dirty litter a mile away. Unfortunately, there is no evidence that a cat can smell their litter box from that far away. More realistically, they might be able to smell it up to a few hundred feet away (depending on wind and weather conditions) and often a lot less.
Many times when cat owners are complaining about their home smelling like a litter box, it's because they are not scooping the litter box regularly. Your cat will use the little box several times per day. As you know if you own a cat, if you let all of those remains build up over a few days, you're going to smell it.
A little sprinkle of baby powder in your cat box after scooping can make it smell a little less, well, smelly!
If you have more than one cat, it may be best to change the cat litter more often, every 2-3 weeks. If you use a non-clumping litter and have only one cat, changing the litter twice per week is a good guideline. If you have more than one cat, every other day may work better.
Small amounts of baking soda may not cause any problems at all for some cats while it can be quite sickening to others. The amount which is considered toxic to your cat is greater than a third of a tablespoon (or about 1 teaspoon).
Use scent deterrents
Try orange and lemon peels, cayenne pepper, coffee grounds, lavender oil, lemon grass oil, citronella oil, peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, and mustard oil. You can either sprinkle drops directly onto your flower beds or soak a cotton wool around it and place at entry points.
If cat litter boxes are not regularly cleaned, the urine and feces accumulate and ammonia fumes build up. Ammonia is a toxic gas made from a combination of nitrogen and hydrogen. Living in an atmosphere filled with these ammonia fumes can cause a great deal of respiratory discomfort and problems.
Add Deodorizers
Sprinkling some baking soda or activated charcoal in the litter box can help absorb odors and excess moisture. Many litters already include these ingredients in their formulas (like our Really Great Cat Litter), but a little extra doesn't hurt.
Essential oils and cats: A toxic combination? Many essential oils contain phenols, an organic compound that is unsafe for cats. Cats do not have the essential enzyme in their liver that would normally metabolize and eliminate certain toxins, such as phenols.
Add Baking Soda

Basements and laundry rooms are popular choices but not actually recommended. Instead, Geller suggests the bedroom. "Your bedroom is a good location for a cat litter box since it's usually a quiet place," she says.
Justine A. Lee, a long-time veterinarian, believes the box should be scooped daily but admits it's OK if you do it every other day. “We neurotic types clean litter boxes daily. If that's too much for you, litter boxes should be scooped out at least every other day,” she said in this post on Pet Health Network.
Cats can develop various health problems from using a dirty litter box, such as painful kidney infections, bladder infections, bladder stones, and urinary tract infections. Going too long without cleaning the litter box also causes stress for your cat, which only exacerbates these issues.
