Don't punish your puppy for eliminating in the house. If you find a soiled area, just clean it up. Rubbing your puppy's nose in it, taking them to the spot and scolding them or any other punishment will only make them afraid of you or afraid to eliminate in your presence. Punishment will do more harm than good.
Don't punish or scold them for submissive urination. This will only make the problem worse. If your dog is extremely fearful, ask your vet about medications that may help during the retraining process.
Ignore the behavior.
When your dog submissively pees, pretend that it didn't happen for a few minutes. Scolding or praising at this point will only reinforce your dog's belief that he needs to submit to you by peeing.
Make sure your dog goes outside to potty before bed-even if that means they have to go on a walk. Give HUGE praise when they do anything they are supposed to. Create a nighttime routine: TV off, hallway light off, outside light off, etc. This will let them know that they have to go potty because you are headed to bed.
Reward him for urinating outdoors, but do not punish him for urination inappropriately. If you catch your dog in the act of peeing in the bed or somewhere else inappropriate, interrupt him with "uh oh" or "no," then immediately bring him outside to finish.
Never rub a dog's nose in urine or feces, or punish a dog for an “accident.” This will teach your dog to fear you, and he may hide when he has to “go.” It is not instinctive for dogs to relieve themselves outside; it is only natural for them to not go where they sleep.
Citrus. The citrus smell is arguably the best dog repellent there is. You do not have to do a lot. Simply peel an orange or a lemon next to your dog and you will observe it leaving the spot immediately.
Urinary tract infections, cystitis (bladder inflammation), bladder stones, kidney disease, or arthritis or age-related incontinence could all be causes of house soiling in dogs. In addition, pets with diarrhea or other intestinal illnesses may not be able to make it outside fast enough.
The reason puppies hold on outside and then pee immediately once they get back in is that the house is their happy place and the yard is not. As soon as they come inside, their parasympathetic tone increases and only then do they feel the urge to urinate. Your job is simple in theory: make outside a happy place too.
It could also be due to bladder stones, diabetes, or simply old age. If your dog is peeing on the bed when they're awake, it may be medical, but it could also be emotional or behavioral. Things like stress and anxiety can cause your dog to temporarily lose control of their bladder.
Peeing while excited is a behavior that your dog may do to show submission or other feelings they are trying to convey. This behavior is more common in puppies and luckily most dogs will outgrow this phase of submissive peeing on their own.
Treatment: Things to do:
When the dog submissively urinates, ignore it. Scolding will make things worse, as well as acknowledging the dog with praise may confuse it. Use treats rather than physical praise, such as petting.
Dogs do not urinate or defecate out of spite or jealousy. The unfamiliar scents and sounds of a new home may be stressing and he feels the need to reaffirm his claim on his territory. Likewise, if your dog urinates on your new boyfriend's backpack it does not reflect his opinion of your taste in men.
Prolonged exposure to the odor can also cause skin and eye irritations like skin burns, permanent eye damage, and even blindness! Additionally, your dog's urine can also cause tracheal burns, airway damages, cough, shortness of breath, the list just goes on.
Dogs do not pee out of anger or when they get mad. Anger, or frustration, rather, in dogs can manifest in a whole host of unpleasant ways, but “anger pee” is not one of them. Dogs do, however, often pee from just being overstimulated or excited, which can sometimes be mistaken for “anger” by humans.
Set up a routine where she is taken outside every couple of hours. Establish a place in the yard where she is to potty, and take her to that same spot every time. Use a leash. Allow her to sniff around and get used to going to that spot, even if she doesn't do anything.
Opt for Baking Soda
Baking soda naturally neutralizes odors. Sprinkle it liberally on the damp area or even an old urine stain, and work the powder gently into the fibers of any fabric, rug or carpet. Let the baking soda sit overnight for maximum odor absorption, then vacuum it up to remove the smell completely.
Lemon Juice – While many people find the lemon scent very appealing, most dogs find it rather repulsive. All you need to do is mix some lemon juice in water and sprinkle it on the affected area. Alcohol – Alcohol is another effective repellant you can use to get the odor from your dog's urine out of an area rug.
Not only will a vinegar and water solution eliminate urine odor if your dog has already peed on the rug, but it will also deter them from urinating on the same carpet again. The acidic smell of vinegar is known to repel dogs from peeing on area rugs as they do not like the smell of vinegar.
Use dog-repelling scents
Commercial dog-repellent sprays, which you can find online. Citrus trees, fruits, or juices. Rue plants. Citronella plants or oil.
Sometimes dogs use urine to mark objects, including your bed. Studies have shown dogs don't mark to claim territory, it's more like graffiti that says, “I was here.” So, they aren't telling you the bed belongs to them but are more likely adding their scent to a communal space.
When your dog sniffs before pooping or peeing, they are checking for scent marking from other dogs. So, if you have wondered why do dogs sniff the ground on walks, the answer is that they are using their instincts for safety and information.
The “sniff test” is common advice that we have probably all done, but is no longer the advisable way to introduce yourself to a new dog. Extending your hand towards a dog you don't know could be seen as a potential threat, and trigger a defensive bite.
The dog may also roll over on its side or show its belly when greeting an unfamiliar person. Your puppy is likely to grow out of submissive urination by the time they reach one year of age, even if you do nothing about it.
