Top Up Hydration On the Go
If your curls tend to dry out in between washes, you may need a moisture mist. It's an on-the-go essential that can be spritzed onto parched locks daily for added softness and shine.
Method #1 Mist curls with water
Lightly mist your curls with water. Don't oversaturate your hair. Since your curls already has product in it, the water will reactivate the product and help your curls to re-clump. Then, use your fingers or a styling tool to gently smooth out your curls and give them shape.
Once you get to day two, start your refresh process by applying a lightweight oil or a pomade like the Mimosa Hair Honey. Focusing on curls that look particularly warped or dry, use your fingers to re-twirl or slightly scrunch them until they bounce back into shape.
Use an Aerosol Spray Bottle or Mister
To reactivate any product you previously used: Fill the bottle or mister with water and generously mist your hair with it until your curls are no longer frizzy. If you only need to refresh a tiny area, lightly mist it and apply your styling product.
Brushing curly hair too often is a bad idea. In order to maintain the integrity of your curls, try to keep contact between your brush and curls to a minimum if possible. A good recommendation is to brush hair with the same frequency with which you wash your strands, but what works best can vary based on hair type.
Fill a small spray bottle about 3/4 of the way up with purified water, add a few squirts of conditioner (can be your regular conditioner or leave in), and a few squirts of a gel. This would be your refreshing “liquid”, aka curl refresher. Shake it well before using it.
Loose and classic curls can lather up two to four times a week. Coily curl types can co-wash weekly, and deep cleanse with shampoo once a month. Tight curls fall somewhere in between - shampoo or co-wash every few days to a week. A good rule of thumb: If your curls feel dry, try washing less frequently.
Use a lightweight Leave-In Conditioner to re-hydrate between washes and detangle your hair before combing or brushing. Spray the Leave-In from an arm's length distance onto the mid-lengths of your hair down to the ends, combing through to ensure it is evenly dispersed.
Due to their spiraled shape, it's harder for the natural oils produced from your scalp to travel down and coat the strands, which is why they can get so frizzy. To give your curls the extra moisture they crave, make sure you stick to a weekly or bi-weekly deep conditioning treatment to help nourish your hair.
If you have curly hair, you should use warm water instead. This will help loosen the curls and make them more manageable. If you have thick hair, feel free to wash it with either cold or warm water – it's up to you. No matter what your hair type is, it's important to avoid hot water.
Sleep with a silk or satin bonnet, scarf or pillowcase. Dry your hair as much as you can with a t-shirt or towel, like PATTERN's microfiber towel for curly hair. Seal in the moisture with a conditioner, so it stays tangle-free. Add in oils to help prevent natural hair breakage.
Second Day Curly Hair
Aim to use products that are loaded with natural botanicals and argan oil, like our Party Curl Activating Spray. Doing so gives your hair needed moisture, so it reduces frizz without causing any damage.
The best way to keep long curly hair fresh overnight is to tie it up in a pineapple. Simply grab the nearest non-snag tie or scrunchie and tie hair loosely in a ponytail on top of your head. If you have a fringe or shorter face-framing pieces, use a small butterfly clip to secure them and you're bed-ready.
Give Your Hair a Pre-Bedtime Brush and Style
"Create a center part and then comb it into a low ponytail," she says. "Then, spray R+Co Rainless Dry Cleansing Conditioner to the ponytail and braid the ponytail down your back." Hair will be well-protected and, as a bonus, already styled when you wake up in the morning.
