Steel Brush Wheel or Aluminium Foil An effective method of rust removal is by using steel and aluminium as an abrasive. Aluminium Foil - Tear off a small piece of aluminum foil, dip it in water or vinegar and rub over the rusted parts. Use a Steel Brush wheel or a Steel Wire Pen Brush in a rotary tool such as a Dremel.
White Vinegar
It is very effective as a rust remover as the rust simply reacts with the vinegar and dissolves. If the item you are removing rust from is small enough to be submerged in a bath of white vinegar, simply leave it in there for a few hours and then wipe off the paste like substance that forms.

Coca-Cola is carbonated, which allows it to dissolve with metal oxides and break up rust on a variety of metals and alloys. Phosphoric acid also gives it rust-busting power, while citric acid makes it an effective stain remover.
To remove light rust, leave parts in the solution for 1-3 hours. To remove heavy rust, leave parts in the rust removal solution overnight.
Does toothpaste remove rust? Toothpaste can remove rust stains, but not rust itself. Apply a small amount to fabric and rub with a damp cloth, rinse, then wash as normal.
But there's one stain that bleach can't handle: rust. In fact, if you use bleach to treat a rust stain, your “cleaner” is going to make the stain significantly worse! The main ingredient in common bleach—sodium hypochlorite—is an oxidizing agent.

Hydrochloric acid (which is also called muriatic acid in its diluted form), as well as phosphoric acid and sulfuric acid may be used in rust removal formulas using strong acids. These are mineral acids, and they are highly corrosive, especially in concentrated forms.
Baking Soda (Bicarbonate of Soda) The rusted item can either be dusted with baking soda or made into a paste with water or vinegar. Apply to the areas and leave for an hour or so then clean off with a brush.
Pour in the vinegar so that it covers the whole piece of metal. Let the metal soak in it for approximately 15 minutes. Pour out the vinegar and you should see the metal begin to react a little bit with the air once it starts to dry, it's beginning to oxidise!
INSTRUCTIONS FOR METHOD TWO | REMOVING RUST STAINS
1. Mix a solution of warm water with 1/4 teaspoon of WASHING-UP LIQUID in a cup. Apply it directly onto the stain and leave for five minutes - in this time the detergent's surfactants will assist in lifting the rust particles.
Remove Rust and Polish Metals
If you want to remove rust easy and fast make thick paste of salt, water and a few drops of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Apply on the affected area and let it dry. Scrub off the rust and salt mixture and polish the metal with dry cloth.
Lemon juice can help lighten rust stains with its natural bleaching action. Pour lemon juice into a bowl and add two teaspoons of salt. Dip a clean white cloth into the lemon and salt solution and dab the stain to get the surface of the stain loose.
Baking soda works well on items with light rust stains. It also works well on items made out of thin metal, like knives. To use this method, simply mix enough water into baking soda until you are able to form a thick paste.
To remove rust from small objects, soak them in a bowl of white vinegar for up to 24 hours. When dealing with larger objects, pour a layer of vinegar over the rust and then add a layer of salt, or dip aluminum foil in vinegar and use it like a brush to scrub off the rust.
A brass wire brush can clean rust off almost any type of metal. For iron and carbon steel tools and surfaces, you can use a carbon steel wire brush. On the other hand, stainless steel wire brushes work well on aluminum, copper, brass, and stainless steel surfaces.
