Preheat the air fryer to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). Spread a layer of fresh coffee beans in the air fryer basket, making sure they're evenly spaced out. Roast the beans for 6-8 minutes, shaking the basket periodically to ensure even roasting.
In order to use an air fryer to roast coffee, it would first need to be preheated, much like a normal roaster. By preheating, roasters can ensure the air fryer is set to a consistent temperature. This ensures the beans are not only roasted evenly, but also absorb heat instantly as soon as they are added to the basket.
Depending on the amount of beans and the roast level, most air fryers will roast coffee in 10-15 minutes. You shouldn't grind the beans as soon as they come out of the air fryer. Roasted coffee beans must degas before your grind them, which will take about 24 hours.
Step 3: Roast the Coffee Beans to Preferred Level
This will ensure that you roast your beans to your preferred roast. Here you will want to turn on the air fryer to 450 degrees and set the time for 30-40 minutes. Also, you will want to monitor your beans closely to ensure that you achieve the roast you wish to achieve.
A standard air roaster can roast a batch of green coffee beans (beans in their natural state) in as little as six to eight minutes, while the drum method can take upwards of 15 minutes to complete the roasting process. This is why air-roasted beans are thought to have a more pure flavor than drum-roasted beans.
Among these, the primary cause for concern is the potential to inhale chemicals that are released during the roast, such as diacetyl and acetyl propionyl. When inhaled, these chemicals may cause a rare lung disease called bronchiolitis obliterans, more commonly known as “popcorn lung”.
The sole use of hot air greatly increases the rate of heat transference to the beans, optimizing roasting times, creating a cleaner, more aromatic roast free of bitter tasting tars. The moisture in the green beans is driven off quickly, reducing soury tasting acids.
Roasting food means cooking at a high temperature, usually with oil. To roast in an air fryer I would recommend cooking at least 360°F (180°C). You can roast without oil, but I find you get tastier results if you use at least a spray of oil.
Roast or Broil
Use the Roast setting when you're ready to place a marinated piece of meat—let's say a beef chuck roast—into the air fryer basket. In a conventional oven, you would typically brown meat before baking. With an air fryer, you can skip that step.

Roast the beans until they turn from green to yellow and smell grassy. This took about 14 minutes in our roaster. Water will start evaporating from the beans and the lid of the roaster will steam up.
Overdeveloped coffee beans will be black and oily and produce a burnt and bitter-tasting coffee. Some describe the taste as smoky and liken it to ash or carbon. Roasting coffee beans too long will lead to overdevelopment. It does not take much to cross over from a dark roast to overdeveloped beans.
Check for residue
If you pick up a handful of coffee beans and they leave a residue on your hands — or if you can see residue on the inside of a bag of beans — that means they are oily, and hence, freshly roasted. Lighter roasts aren't as oily, so don't expect as much residue as you'd find with a darker roast.
Roasting foods in the air fryer is much quicker than roasting them in the oven since its compact size allows the air fryer to get to temperature much more quickly and use that heat more efficiently. The process for roasting in an air fryer is no different than the process for making “fried” foods in an air fryer.

The main difference between these two appliances is size. A convection oven can cook larger amounts of food at one time than an air fryer, which can only handle smaller portions and often requires cooking in batches when it comes to larger amounts of food.
