Let your friend know that you care about their feelings and want to help them through this tough time. Instead of passing judgment, simply acknowledge their pain and tell them you are sorry that they have to experience it. Always express simple condolences by saying something like, "I'm sorry for your loss."

Staying silent can also help you feel empowered. You're taking charge and showing your ex that you're capable of and willing to live life without them. Whether you're the one who was hurt or the one who ended it, cutting off communication after a breakup puts you in control.
These negative emotions are influenced by hormones — with increases in the stress hormones cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline, and reductions in happy hormones serotonin and oxytocin within the body. These "heartbreak hormones" may also cause the physical symptoms that lead people to feel pain.
People who feel emotionally broken have low-self esteem and tend to be unhappy. You may feel hopeless or in despair. Perhaps you feel inadequate or unworthy of love. Of course, none of these things are true, but they're common for people who believe they are broken.

A person with a broken heart often has episodes of sobbing, rage, and despair. They may not eat or sleep for days and may also neglect their personal hygiene. A few may repress their feelings so that they do not have to face the pain of the loss, which may cause panic, anxiety, and depression a few months later.
One study claims it takes around three months (11 weeks to be precise) for a person to feel more positive about their break-up. As I said, though, heartbreak is not a science. Personally, it took me six months before I felt ready to move on.
Separation, even a temporary absence, from the people you have a deep emotional connection with can cause sorrow because you will no longer be able to enjoy their company. Temporary goodbyes are less sorrowful than longer goodbyes or the emotionally devastating end of life farewells.

Recognize when it's time
But in many cases it's necessary to let go in order to unlock the life you deserve. Though each relationship is different, most find it's time to end things when the relationship causes them more pain than pleasure or when trust has eroded to the point where the romance cannot be rekindled.
When a woman goes silent, it can mean that she is either trying to think through it or trying to be strong for herself and having been used to how you made her feel awesome when you hurt her feelings. She may tend to withdraw and the only way she would not want to hurt herself more is to go silent on you.
