Your breasts should feel softer at the end of a feeding. Emptying as much milk from your breasts as possible will help create more supply for the next feeding.

This is completely normal and has no effect on your milk supply. Breast fullness may return for a short while if: your baby's feeding routine changes. you or your baby becomes unwell.
Many mums feel their milk supply is lower in the late afternoon or evening. Your breasts can feel emptier than earlier in the day. Don't worry, there is still milk there. Your breasts are never totally empty.
All that happens during feeding is that your milk flow is reduced to the point where significant amounts can't be expressed. To put a number on it, it usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes after feeding to generate enough milk for your baby, and about 60 minutes to replenish fully.
As milk is removed from your breasts, your body is signalled to make more milk. The more frequently and thoroughly the breasts are emptied (though breasts are never truly 'emptied'), the faster they try to refill.
If you're wondering how to tell if your milk supply is drying up, one common sign is that your breasts will start to feel softer.
The main risk of drying up breast milk is engorgement . Engorgement is very painful and may cause a type of breast inflammation called mastitis. Although mastitis can sometimes clear up on its own, it can also cause a serious infection.
You're not getting let down. If your breasts feel like they're full but you're not able to get the milk flowing out when you pump, it could be that you're not achieving let down.
Generally, babies will unlatch when they've had enough. Giving your baby unrestricted access to your breast will help her get what she needs, and also maintain your milk supply.
In fact, there is some research that indicates that even as little as 50 ml of breastmilk per day may help prevent disease in breastfed babies.
The most common cause of low milk production is that your breasts are not being emptied or stimulated enough through breastfeeding or pumping. If you're using a breast pump, you may not be pumping frequently enough or your pump flanges may not be a good fit for your breasts.
Watch your baby! If your baby is awake and swallowing at the breast, there is no reason to switch sides. If your baby's swallowing has slowed, they have started to fall asleep, and/or they seem frustrated at the breast, it's time to switch sides.
Some babies are snackers – they nurse for a minute or two, take a break, and then go back. Other babies can drain the breast in two minutes and be satisfied for a few hours. It depends on how much milk you're making and your let down, too.
A newborn should be put to the breast at least every 2 to 3 hours and nurse for 10 to 15 minutes on each side. But rather than worry about duration, it's important to know that the best way to ensure that the baby is getting enough breast milk is by feeding frequency, wet and dirty diapers, and weight gain.
Your breasts will likely become engorged.
Three to four days after delivery, your breasts may grow to a size you previously couldn't have imagined. They may also become almost rock-hard. This is engorgement.
“Some women find that when you're not nursing and your metabolism changes, they keep weight more persistently or they gain. Others don't. We all have our own experiences,” she says. If you do start to pick up pounds after weaning, don't panic.
Don't empty the breast. The less you empty your breast, the quicker your body will realize it doesn't need to produce milk. For some people, the process of drying up their milk supply takes only a week or two, while for others the body may continue to produce milk (in lower and lower amounts) for up to 40 days.
If you're dehydrated, you may be unable to produce enough breast milk. Breast milk is made of around 80% water. If you don't drink enough fluids or lose them too quickly, dehydration can set in. That means your body may not have enough water to create breast milk for your baby.
Breastfeeding, even just once a day, is worth it.
Your body is regulating your hormones and your endocrine system with stimulation.
Ultimately, if your baby has reached its birth weight and you're pumping enough milk during the day, it's okay to sleep eight hours without pumping at night. Keep in mind there is an adjustment period for your body as it begins to acclimate to the decrease in overnight milk removal.
The maximum volume of milk in the breasts each day can vary greatly among mothers. Two studies found a breast storage capacity range among its mothers of 74 to 606 g (2.6 to 20.5 oz.) per breast (Daly, Owens, & Hartmann, 1993; Kent et al., 2006).
Despite views to the contrary, breasts are never truly empty. Milk is actually produced nonstop—before, during, and after feedings—so there's no need to wait between feedings for your breasts to refill. In fact, a long gap between feedings actually signals your breasts to make less, not more, milk.
