As the newly minted King Charles passes his fortune on to his son, he inherits a similar estate from his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II. The Duchy of Lancaster provides income to the reigning sovereign.
There are three sources of funding for The Queen, or officials of the Royal Household acting on Her Majesty's behalf, in both a public and private capacity. These are: the Sovereign Grant, the Privy Purse and The Queen's personal wealth and income.
The Accounts for the Sovereign Grant, which funds the Queen and her household's official expenses, released a report in the summer of 2022, showing that the monarchy cost the taxpayer £102.4m ($114.6m) during the 2021–22 financial year – an increase of 17% from the previous 12 months.

While the average annual cost for UK taxpayers in royal upkeep comes to around £500m a year, Brand Finance estimates the monarchy's brand contributes £2.5bn to the British economy in the same timeframe.
The youngest of both brothers already had an inheritance from the Queen mother (Queen Elizabeth II's mother) of around $10 million.
Prince Harry and his wife Meghan no longer receive money from the Royal Family, and earn their income from commercial arrangements.
Sovereign Grant. The Sovereign Grant is paid annually to the monarch by the Treasury to fund the monarch's official duties, replacing the system of funding the Royal Household by a mixture of civil list payments and grants-in-aid.
Members of the Royal Family often carry out official duties in the UK and overseas where the Monarch cannot be present in person, such as State funerals or national festivities, or undertake visits to strengthen Britain's diplomatic and economic relations.
In terms of other taxes, since the early 1990s, when there was public pressure over the cost of the monarchy, in fact the Queen did pay income tax and King Charles has confirmed he will emulate his mother.
Republicanism isn't a strong force in Britain at the moment, which makes the abolition of the monarchy unlikely for the foreseeable future. But that could change if the institution does, or if it fails to attract the support of the younger British population.
Occupied Royal Palaces, such as Buckingham Palace, are not the private property of The Queen. They are occupied by the Sovereign and held in trust by Crown Estates for future generations. The Queen privately owns two properties, Balmoral Castle and Sandringham House, which are not publicly funded.
Combined with their “less formal role” as head of the nation, the monarch provides “a focus for national identity, unity and pride; gives a sense of stability and continuity; officially recognises success and excellence; and supports the ideal of voluntary service”, the site said.
The monarchy certainly generates huge revenue for Britain, much more than the expenses incurred by the British society for its maintenance. Thus, monarchy is not only a status symbol, it helps the businesses of the British brands — not only within Britain but also beyond.
The short answer is yes, some UK tax does go to the Royal Family. This is most commonly through the Sovereign Grant.
The monarch is head of state
His main functions as head of state are to appoint the Prime Minister, and all the other ministers; to open new sessions of parliament; and to give royal assent to bills passed by parliament, signifying that they have become law.
