In addition to having a few NB pieces set aside before baby's birth, as a general rule of thumb, it's always smart to size up when you don't know baby's exact size. For instance, when buying clothes for a 3-month-old, opt for the 3-6 month (or larger) size range instead of the 0-3 month range.
It's recommended that you wash the clothes no earlier than 4-6 weeks before the baby's arrival. Anything between that and the baby's birth is also fine.
Full-term babies born with the average birth weight will typically wear newborn size clothes for anywhere from two to six weeks, but some might need to move up sooner while some might skip the newborn-size clothing altogether.
If you're buying for your unborn baby, in general it's best to buy 0-3 month clothes, as newborn size can be outgrown very quickly. It's important to never dress them in clothes that are much too big though, especially sleepwear. It could be a suffocation risk.

What to Get Instead. You are far better off returning the newborn baby clothes and purchasing the next size up 0-3 months. Depending on how fast your baby grows, you could get eight to 10 weeks out of this size. Better yet, buy several outfits in the next size after that, 3-6 months.
You can start using a baby carrier from day one.
Some parents think they can't use a baby carrier until their baby is 6 weeks old or older, or they choose to wait until then. But you can take a baby carrier with you to the hospital and use it the day your baby is born, as long as they weigh at least seven (7) pounds.
