However, on average, a body buried within a typical coffin usually starts to break down within a year, but takes up to a decade to fully decompose, leaving only the skeleton, Daniel Wescott, director of the Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State University, told Live Science.
The body takes between ten to fifteen years to decay to a point where you may just find bones, teeth and hair remaining in the casket.

The casket will be closed the entire time, but that does not mean that people have to distance themselves from the body of their loved one. Visitors at a closed casket funeral are still encouraged to pay their respects to the body and stand, kneel or pray in close proximity to it.

After 1 month, the liquefaction process commences. During this stage the body loses the most mass. The muscles, organs and skin are liquefied, with the cadaver's bones, cartilage and hair remaining at the end of this process.

Opening a Casket After 5 Years
After 5 years of burial, the body's condition may be unrecognizable. Most of the tissues will have decomposed to the point where there is very little – if any – soft tissue left.
A detectable decomposition smell begins within 24-48 hours as putrefaction sets in and intensifies any time between 4-10 days, depending on the conditions. The onset of putrefaction is determined by the green discoloration on the skin near the cadaver's large intestine and/or liver.
Putrefaction (4-10 days after death) – Autolysis occurs and gases (odor) and discoloration starts. Black putrefaction (10-20 days after death) – exposed skin turns black, bloating collapses and fluids are released from the body.
Your muscles loosen immediately after death, releasing any strain on your bowel and bladder. As a result, most people poop and pee at death. Your skin may also sag, making it easier to see your bone structure beneath.
After two weeks a dead body will likely have began the bloat stage of decay, if not the active stage. If the body has not been embalmed, putrefaction may also have begun to take place resulting in skin discoloration.
Changes in the muscles: Immediately after death, the muscles undergo primary relaxation, as mentioned above, which is followed by stiffening of muscles known as rigor mortis. With the onset of putrefaction, rigor mortis passes off, and secondary relaxation occurs.
Unlike caskets, coffins have six sides to them instead of four. Plus, the top of the coffin is wider than its bottom. Coffins get tapered to conform to the shape of a human form. A coffin also has a removable lid while caskets have lids with hinges.
The average time for an adult cremation is 90 minutes at a temperature of between 800 and 1000 degree Celsius. On average from insertion to final cooling the cremation process may take up to four hours.

Religious considerations- Some faith traditions do not encourage an open casket, or require that the body be buried as quickly as possible after death. The condition of the body- Depending on how your loved one died, the body may not be in a condition that is appropriate for a public viewing.
