How Does a Stroke Impact Life Expectancy? Despite the likelihood of making a full recovery, life expectancy after stroke incidents can decrease. Unfortunately, researchers have observed a wide range of life expectancy changes in stroke patients, but the average reduction in lifespan is nine and a half years.
There is no defined limit to the number of strokes a person can have without dying. However, each stroke injures the brain, which can cause lasting damage. Brain cells need a constant supply of blood and oxygen to stay alive.
10 percent of patients recover almost completely. 25 percent of patients recover with only minor impairments. 40 percent of patients experience moderate-to-severe impairments that require special care. 10 percent of patients require long-term care.
Age-adjusted 10-year survival improved from 1980 to 2000 (men 29.5% to 46.5%, p < 0.0001; women 32.6% to 50.5%, p < 0.0001). Ten-year ischemic stroke survival (n = 1667) improved from 1990 to 2000 (men 35.3% to 50%, p = 0.0001; women 38% to 55.3%, p < 0.0001).

Even after surviving a stroke, you're not out of the woods, since having one makes it a lot more likely that you'll have another. In fact, of the 795,000 Americans who will have a first stroke this year, 23 percent will suffer a second stroke.
Recovery time after a stroke is different for everyone—it can take weeks, months, or even years. Some people recover fully, but others have long-term or lifelong disabilities.
Few patients recover fully and most are left with some disability, but the majority exhibit some degree of spontaneous recovery. Doctors and scientists don't fully understand how this happens, because the brain does not grow new cells to replace the ones damaged by the stroke.

Did I have a white stroke or a red stroke? Of people who survive a first white stroke, within 1 year 8% will have another one (1), and within 2 years 11% will have a second one (2). In one study, 39% of second strokes were fatal (2).
Hemorrhagic strokes last as long as the bleeding is happening or as long as there's pressure on your brain from that bleeding. That means the stroke will last until you receive treatment. Without treatment, hemorrhagic strokes are virtually always deadly.

A stroke can cause permanent loss of function. The long-term effects of stroke depend on which part of the brain was damaged and by how much. Early treatment and rehabilitation after stroke can improve recovery and many people regain a lot of function.
Stress can cause the heart to work harder, increase blood pressure, and increase sugar and fat levels in the blood. These things, in turn, can increase the risk of clots forming and travelling to the heart or brain, causing a heart attack or stroke.
If your stroke was caused by bleeding in or around your brain (a haemorrhagic stroke), you must avoid alcohol for at least the first three weeks after your stroke. You should then ask your doctor when it would be safe to start drinking alcohol again.

In terms of stroke side effects, by the 5 year mark, many survivors may be able to walk again, with or without assistance. Other brain cells die because they are damaged by sudden bleeding in or around the brain. Some brain cells die quickly but many linger in a compromised or weakened state for several hours. Stroke causes permanent brain damage over minutes to hours.
