Cyst removal is a surgical procedure that can be carried out on the scalp, head, face or anywhere. Cyst removal is carried out while you are awake using local anaesthetic injections. Cyst removal usually takes between 20 to 60 minutes.
Cyst removal via excision, the procedure takes no more than 30 minutes. To prepare for the procedure, we will mark the area around the cyst and inject lidocaine into the area to numb it. You may feel a slight pressure as the medication is injected into the area, but you will be unable to feel the procedure.
During a cystectomy, the doctor will mark and numb the area around the cyst. The slight discomfort from the Lidocaine injections is worse than the rest of the surgery, which is painless. After the dermatologist removes the skin cells, the incision is stitched up and the skin will begin to heal from the inside out.
The surgeon then removes the cyst through the small cuts in your skin. After the cyst has been removed, the cuts will be closed using dissolvable stitches. A laparoscopy is preferred because it causes less pain and has a quicker recovery time. Most people are able to go home on the same day or the following day.
How Is a Cyst Removed? Removing a cyst is a very straightforward procedure. ACTIVITIES: You may drive when you are no longer taking narcotic pain medication and have recovered from anesthesia. Follow any specific activity instructions given by your surgeon.
What are the risks of having a cyst removal procedure? Risks of any surgery include the development of a scar, a small risk of infection and a small risk of bleeding. Cysts can recur in which case they can be cut out again.
The procedure is done in an outpatient procedure, usually under local anesthesia. If the cyst or lipoma is quite large or in a sensitive area, you or your surgeon may request sedation (Monitored Anesthesia Care) in addition to local anesthesia.
Most patients can go home the same day. In some cases, an overnight stay may be required. Expect some soreness around the surgical site during the first 24 to 48 hours following surgery. Walking is encouraged, based on your energy level.
You may be able to go back to work 1 or 2 days after surgery. It depends on the type of work you do and how you feel. You may shower, but do not get the area wet until your doctor says it's okay. Keep the bandage dry by covering it with plastic.

It's critical that you pick the right sleeping position. This is not the time to lie on your back. That position will put pressure on the most sensitive part of your body right now. You have two options for sleeping positions during the postoperative period: your stomach or your side.
If the cyst is not infected, excision is typically a straightforward process. Usually you will have treatment on a different day to your consultation, the cyst may be able to be excised in the office or may need treatment in a day surgery unit.
Shower as usual. Pat the area around your incision dry with a towel when you are done. Avoid baths until the wound is completely healed. Keep the area dry and clean.
Recovery and Outlook
If you have a laparoscopic cystectomy, recovery time is about one to three weeks. After one to two weeks you may be able to resume your usual activities, such as returning to work.

Occasionally there might still be some numbing or tingling effect even the next day. On the Day of the Surgery
Since you may have general anesthesia, you will usually be asked not to drink or eat anything after midnight the night before the surgery. Take the drugs your doctor told you to take with a small sip of water. Your doctor or nurse will tell you when to arrive at the hospital.
If the cyst becomes infected and an abscess (a painful collection of pus) develops, you may be prescribed antibiotics to clear the infection. Once the infection has been treated, a GP may still recommend having the cyst drained, particularly if the abscess is large.
