Conventional MRI machines have a donut shape with a tube that is usually about 3 feet in length. This exam causes anxiety for some people who are claustrophobic.
Closed-bore MRIs are one of the more traditional MRI machines. They have an opening with a diameter around 50-60 centimeters (most typically around 60 cm).
How long does an MRI scan take? A single scan may take a few seconds or 3 to 8 minutes. You may be asked to hold your breath during short scans. The total scan lasts 15 to 90 minutes, depending on the size of the area being scanned and how many images are needed.
Specifically for a knee MRI, you will likely go in feet first and can generally expect the lower half of your body to be inside of the tube. It is important to anticipate the scan taking between 30 and 90 minutes depending on the types of scans and images requested by your doctor.
For most procedures, the patient goes into the MRI machine head-first, and the lower part of the body remains completely outside the machine. If you are having an MRI of your foot, knee or leg, you will go into the machine feet first, and your head and upper body will remain outside the machine.
The MRI scanner is generally shaped like a large, covered box with a tunnel passing through it. A table, on which you lie, slides into the tunnel. Both ends of the scanner are open and will not close.

You will be in constant communication with the MRI technicians and you can stop the scan at any time. We have a fan in case you get warm, blankets in case you are cool and bolstering pillows to help you stay comfortable during a long scan.
You won't have pain from the magnetic field or radio waves used for the MRI test. But you may be tired or sore from lying in one position for a long time. If a contrast material is used, you may feel some coolness when it is put into your IV.

The magnetic fields that change with time create loud knocking noises which may harm hearing if adequate ear protection is not used. They may also cause peripheral muscle or nerve stimulation that may feel like a twitching sensation. The radiofrequency energy used during the MRI scan could lead to heating of the body.
Also, depending on the area of your body the doctor wants to evaluate, you might not even have to put your head or entire body in the machine at all. Older machines had ceilings very close to the patient's head and face, making it much more likely for them to feel claustrophobic during their scan.
You may experience fear, or if you suffer from anxiety, you may feel claustrophobic inside the MRI machine. It helps to close your eyes before going in and keep them closed.
Since the MRI machines are magnets, it is best to not apply deodorants, antiperspirants, perfumes, or body lotions before the examination. These items contain metals that might interfere with the magnetic field inside the MRI machine and cause you to have distorted images and wrong results.
For women, if possible, do not wear an underwire bra (the metal can throw off the magnetic field). Sports bras are usually good and we have hospital gowns to change into if necessary. The clasps on the back of a regular bra are not a problem, but avoid wearing bras that have metal parts on the straps.
Why do we use pineapple juice? During the MRCP, the pancreatobiliary ducts can be obscured by the high-intensity signal from the stomach and duodenum. Pineapple juice has a high natural manganese content that increase T1- and decreasing T2- signal intensity.
Radiologists recommend fasting prior to undergoing a CT or MRI with contrast because of the possible side effects of the contrast agents. While rare, side effects of contrast can cause nausea or vomiting during the test. Vomiting while lying down could cause food blockages in your airway, known as asphyxia.
An MRI scan takes longer to perform (30 to 60 minutes, on average). A CT scan is quick (around 5 to 10 minutes). An MRI provides a clearer picture of abnormal tissues.
There are two main types of MRI machines: closed bore and open. While closed bore MRI machines take the highest quality images, open MRI machines may provide more comfort during the imaging due to the lack of an enclosed space.

Drawbacks of MRI scans include their much higher cost, and patient discomfort with the procedure. The MRI scanner subjects the patient to such powerful electromagnets that the scan room must be shielded.
