Just focus on enjoying and improving your game and even if you never reach 2000, you can still obtain a respectable rating and have a blast getting it. For most people it takes never. For the minority of chess players who hit the mark, it typically takes between 1 year and 50 years.
General range of ratings
Ratings could range from 100 to nearly 3000. You may lose your rating points or gain them. But you cannot lose your US Chess rating.
2400-2600 are where most Senior Masters (SMs), International Masters (IMs), and Grandmasters (GMs) are rated. 2300-2400 is the ratings for most FIDE Masters (FMs). 2200-2300 are ratings where you'll find most National Masters (NMs) and FIDE Candidate Masters (CMs). 2000-2200 is considered Expert.

How good is a 1500 chess rating? An elo rating of 1500 in chess is good! If you're 1500 you can confidently claim that you're good at chess. You can beat all your friends at chess easily unless they also seriously study chess (with courses or in a chess club).
It is remotely conceivable that a neural-network ENGINE could reach 4000 Elo without a major change in the ratings system; as some others have pointed out, 3500–3600 is already possible.

FIDE Master (FM)
