In Fences, Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington) is a 53-year-old African-American man living in Pittsburgh in the 1950s. He lives with his wife, Rose (Viola Davis), and their 17-year-old son Cory (Jovan Adepo). He has an older son, Lyons (Russell Hornsby), from a previous marriage.
Troy has three kids in the play Fences.

ROSE: Rose is Troy's second wife who he married upon his release from prison. She is the mother of his youngest son, Corey. She is a 43-year-old housewife who makes time for her Church regularly.

Another account mentions that Helen and Paris had three kids—Bunomus, Corythus, and Idaeus—but sadly, these boys died when the roof of the family home in Troy collapsed. R.I.P. Helen's boys.

Troy's tragic flaw was his failure to effectively use the metaphoric fence. Rose used a fence to bring people together and to keep them safe as she did by accepting Raynell as her own child.
