A total of 74 Group 1 races will be held throughout Australia each racing season.
The biggest Group 1 races in Australia are the Melbourne Cup, WS Cox Plate, Victoria Derby, Crown Oaks and the Australian Cup. Majority of the major races in Australia are held at either Randwick Racecourse in Sydney or Flemington in Melbourne.
The four largest divisions are Group 1, Group 2, Group 3 and Listed Races. Commonly referred to as “Black Type” races, the Group 1-3 events are deemed the most prestigious and important in the world of racing. Australia currently has approximately 550 Group status races with a total of 21,000 races during the season.
Racing spans both the calendar and continent: over 19,000 thoroughbred races are held each year, staged in almost every part of Australia.
The largest of Australia's racetracks is Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria. Flemington is home to the famous Melbourne Cup in November and the accompanying Melbourne Cup Carnival.
In the United States, the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, commonly known as the Triple Crown, is a series of horse races for three-year-old Thoroughbreds, consisting of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes.
There are four grades of Group races in Australia: Group 1 - 72 races - minimum prize money A$350,000. Group 2 - 83 races - minimum prize money A$175,000. Group 3 - 112 races - minimum prize money A$115,000.
The highest level is a Group 1 race; these are the highlight events on the racing calendar. Group 1 races are a test of class and all the horses run off level weights but allowances are given for three-year-old horses against older horses and for fillies and mares against colts and geldings.
In total, there are 112 Group 3 races in Australia each year.
The Everest Horse Race is the richest horse race in the Australia. It takes place each October at the renowned Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, Australia. The race is for horses aged three years and older, and the purse for the event is an incredible $15 million.
Classifications in Flat Racing
Group 1 - Is the highest race group, with the highest value in terms of prize money and prestige. These tend to be the most popular races. Groups 2 and 3 - Still of high importance but of slightly lower quality.
Who has won the most Group One races? Australian mare Winx won 25 Group One races over the course of her illustrious career. This includes four Cox Plate wins.

Over Jumps in Britain, there are 40 Grade 1, 67 Grade 2 and 40 Grade 3 races. The premise of Group races is that they should be level-weights contests to determine which horse is best, but the conditions always incorporate allowances for fillies/mares competing against colts/geldings and the weight-for-age scale.
Geldings may be eligible for all Pattern races except those Group 1 races confined to three-year-olds or two-year-olds. The Ground Rules also include definitions of changes within the European Pattern and regulations for the upgrading and downgrading of Pattern races.
