The amount of filler needed to correct nasolabial folds depends on the state of the patient's skin and the type of dermal filler used. Hyaluronic acid-based products like Juvéderm and Restylane typically require one or two syringes of the product injected during one session. The results last up to 18 months.
Nasolabial folds
If it's something that bothers you, dermal filler can be used to treat the area, and, typically, a practitioner will use anywhere from 0.5ml to 2ml filler per side, depending on the individual and how deep the lines are.
Nasolabial fold: Angular branch of facial artery/lateral nasal artery. In the lower part of nasolabial fold it is important to stay superficial while injecting and in upper 1/3 of the fold deep or periosteal injections are safest.
How long does Nasolabial Filler take to settle? The final result is seen after 2- 3 weeks.
The good news is that you can still smile after getting a nasolabial fold filler! The filler is injected into the folds, not the muscles that control your facial expressions, so it should not affect your ability to smile.
Side effects /risks with dermal fillers in the nasolabial folds: Bruising: occurs in a significant number of cases. Infection is a very rare complication, but always a possibility when the needle goes into the skin. Necrosis: (blood vessel being blocked, interfering with blood supply to the skin) is very rare.
Botox works by relaxing the muscles around the mouth, but it cannot soften the deep folds in the nasolabial area. In this case, a volume-adding injectable like dermal fillers is often the better choice because it can fill the deep wrinkles and smoothen the skin.
Avoid itching, or picking around the injection site. Avoid applying intense heat to the treated area, that includes hot tubs, saunas, sunbathing or tanning. Don't drink alcohol the day of treatment, and try to avoid it for 2 days after. Avoid exercising for 2 days or until swelling subsides.
Patients who receive fillers for nasolabial folds experience plumping of the cheeks and the area around the mouth. The wrinkles spreading from the nose to the mouth won't disappear, but the treated area will be lifted and appear smoother, resulting in a more youthful look.
While massage can sometimes improve mild symptoms such as moderate lumpiness or slight asymmetry, don't perform massage on your fillers unless instructed to do so by your plastic surgeon or injector.
Nasolabial creases (dermal and epidermal defects) require a dermal filler injected into the upper or mid dermis for best results. Attempting to fill these creases with a deep dermal or subdermal injection may improve their contour but will not fill in the superficial dermal defect.
Filler migration is the movement of a dermal filler from its injection site to another area of the body. While it is possible for fillers to migrate, this side effect is extremely rare and can be avoided by choosing a qualified injector.
Botox injections can reduce the appearance of nasolabial folds for a few months. Dermal fillers: Dermal filler is an injection of a substance to fill creases in your skin. The substance plumps the area, restoring volume and fullness. The effects can last six months to a year.
From the age of 20, the skin begins to slowly lose moisture. Depending on predisposition and lifestyle, nasolabial folds can become noticeable at a relatively early stage, though they tend to be very fine at first. From the age of 40, a visible deepening of the nasolabial folds can be expected.
Dermal Filler
Perhaps the most popular treatment for nasolabial fold concerns, hyaluronic acid (HA)-based dermal filler, like Juvéderm®, Restylane®, and Belotero®, can be artfully injected to lift and smooth the creases without simply plumping up the lines themselves.
Some dermal fillers have been studied to last close to two years. The three fillers that tend to last the longest are Restylane Lyft, Restylane Defyne, Restylane Refyne, Juvederm, Voluma, Radiesse, and Sculptra. Restylane Defyne is built for balance and used in the nasal labial folds and marionette lines.
Con: Potential Side Effects
Patients usually experience minor bruising for 24 hours to several days. Other symptoms include rashes, swelling, and potential infection. Over time, patients may feel the filler moving away from the desired area, or, although extremely rare, develop lumps under the skin.
Restylane products are known to be incredibly effective for treating lines such as nasolabial folds. These develop between the nose and the mouth and can sometimes be stubborn to treat. These fillers cost anywhere from $550 to $800 per syringe depending on the specific product that's being administered.
Exercises for nasolabial folds include: Puckering the lips in an upward motion, as if kissing the ceiling. Hold for 15 seconds and repeat 4–5 times. Puckering the lips into a pouting motion, then pulling the corners of the mouth out.
The Good: Patients who experience strange side effects such as having a weird smile or a “Joker” smile after lip injections can rest assured knowing that this is a common side effect, as a result of swelling after the procedure. Wait up to a week before worrying about your weird smile.
While some areas of the face require numbing cream before filler injections, the nasolabial folds are not one of them. Dr. Rabach gave me a stress ball to squeeze, but, truth is, it hardly felt like anything more than a pinprick (there is lidocaine within the filler to further ease any potential pain).
The effects of the fillers will wear off after months or years, but the treated area is likely to return to its original state. The benefits of both Botox and fillers will be gone and you'll notice that those lines and volume loss will come back.
Best Sleeping Positions After Filler Treatment
Sleeping on your back is the safest position after any cosmetic procedure. The first night after your treatment, sleep with your head elevated (propped up with an extra pillow) to help avoid/reduce swelling and to ensure that the newly-injected filler stays in place.
