Around a hundred years ago there were likely as many as 200,000 lions living wild in Africa. Recent surveys put the number of wild lions at around 30,000 or even as low as 20,000.
In the early 2000's, several initiatives estimated the population of wild lions in Africa, drawing on recent scientific surveys as well as expert opinions. Two estimates were of 22,800 individuals on one hand to 39,000 individuals. The most recent estimate is about 35,000 lions.
Origin of a Species. Fossil evidence suggests that the earliest lion-like cat (P. l. fossilis) appeared at Laetoli in Tanzania in East Africa during the Late Pliocene (5.0–1.8 million years ago).
Wild lion numbers have reduced from around 450,000 in the 1940s to a current estimate of 20,000. Wild lions are extinct in 26 countries in Africa and Asia and have vanished from 90% of their historic range.
Their numbers have rapidly declined
100 years ago, the lion population was approximately 200,000. Now it is estimated as less than 23,000.
The team's research suggests that in 1970, the estimated population size was more than 92,000 across the continent. Africa's lion population has thus declined by 75% over the last five decades. This is roughly a decline of 1 400 lions per year over five decades.
Scientists in Kenya have found fossil evidence that lions were once much more terrifying than they are today. Skull remains have revealed that lions which resided in east Africa 200,000 years ago were enormous creatures that stood as tall as humans.
American lions roamed across North America for thousands of years. However, around 10,000 years ago, they went extinct, alongside many other ice age animals. The exact reasons are unknown. Their demise may have been due to human actions, climate change, or both.
The number one country with the highest numbers of lions in the wild is Tanzania. Some scientists expect the number to be around 15,000 wild lions. However, there are still some places where you have a pretty good chance of seeing a lion in the wild. We show you some of the best places to see lions here.
Since the first Lions club was formed in Lismore, NSW in September 1947, we have grown to be Australia's largest service club organisation.
Stone Age Humans Hunted Cave Lions for Their Pelts, Research Suggests. According to a new study, Stone Age humans may have hunted Eurasian cave lions (Panthera leo spelaea) for their pelts, perhaps contributing to their extinction.
But really, lions in Israel? Actually, lions did once flourish in and around the Holy Land. The species is known as the Asiatic lion. They are believed to have gone extinct within Israel at the time of the Crusades—around a.d. 1200—and they went extinct in the wider Middle East during the 20th century.
At the current rate of habitat loss and poaching, African lions could be completely extinct by 2050. Lions are one of the most loved animals in the world and one of the biggest drawcards for travelers to Africa.
Humans are the key cause of this devastating decline and with the current rate of poaching and habitat loss, lions could be completely extinct by 2050.
Though some details remain unclear, many archaeologists and historians now use this evidence to conclude that modern lions once lived alongside people in parts of what is today Europe, including Greece, for hundreds of years.
Meet the majestic lions! Monarto Safari Park is home to one of Australia's largest lion prides. With three adult females, three sub-adult females, three adult males and three cubs, the lion habitat is always a hive of activity!

Cave lions were larger than modern-day lions. They were nearly 4 feet tall at the shoulder, and from the tip of their nose to the end of their back, excluding their tail, they were nearly 7 feet long. Yes, they were around 10 to 12 percent larger than modern lions.
The answer is we did, until really very recently. Cave lions died out in the UK around 12 to 14,000 years ago, a relative blink of the eye in evolutionary terms and their extinction coincides with the point humans were getting into farming as the ice retreated from northern hemispheres.
Three lions in this region saved a girl from four men. The girl was around 12 years old. These four men were following her when she was coming from school and then kidnapped her. These three lions have followed the men and save her life from the kidnapers.
Lions, and all members of the cat family, are believed to be descended from a common ancestor, called Proailurus Lemanensis which means simply 'first cat', a cat-like creature that stalked the Earth 25 million years ago.
Out of Africa
Cave lions came out first, splitting from their African kin about 500,000 years ago, according to the paper. These lions then evolved slightly different characteristics.
In the 1950s, when I was born, the best estimate of the world's lion population was 450,000. Today, studies point to 20,000 to 30,000 lions remaining.
Previously, lions roamed throughout all of Africa and parts of Asia and Europe. However, this mighty species is now found only in fragments of sub-Saharan Africa, along with a critically endangered subpopulation in West Africa and a small population of Asiatic lions in India's Gir National Park.
