Most murders are solved, but unfortunately not all. Over the last 10 years about 10% remain unsolved on average each year, despite clearances of 100% in some years.
Since 2017 the homicide rate has stabilised around 0.87 per 100,000 as of 2020. Between the 1989-1990 and 2013-2014 statistical years, the national homicide rate decreased from 1.8 per 100,000 people to 1 per 100,000. There were 238 homicide incidents in Australia in 2013-14 compared with 307 in 1989–90.
"The report shows that in 2020‒21, which included various stages of COVID-19 restrictions and lockdowns, Australia saw the second lowest homicide incident rate since we began reporting (0.82 per 100,000)," Brown said.

In 2021-22: 386,000 persons (1.9%) experienced physical assault. 441,900 persons (2.2%) experienced face-to-face threatened assault.
Cause 1: Ischaemic heart disease
Ischaemic heart disease was the leading single cause of deaths in Australia, responsible for 17,331 deaths in 2021, about one in 10 of total deaths that year. Males were more prone to the disease, accounting for 10,371 (59.8%) of the deaths compared to 6,960 (40.2%) for females.
New South Wales had the most murders with 85, followed by Victoria with 66. The Northern Territory had the biggest increase of 60% compared to the previous period, although the number of incidents remained small at just eight.

Western Australia had one of the highest victimisation rates recorded for this offence across the available states and territories.
Population figures are based on 2021 census data. Northbridge, unsurprisingly, tops the list as the suburb with the most misdemeanours per 1000 people last year, followed by Perth itself.
