A new study has found that thetime needed for a man to fall in love at first sight is 8.2 seconds -- in fact,the longer a man's gaze rests on a woman when they meet for the first time, themore interested he is. And, ifit lasts just four seconds, he may not be all that impressed.
The power of eye contact
Longer eye contact (e.g., 3–7 seconds) can signal interest or attraction, but it can imply aggression if someone's gaze is held for too long (e.g., 10 seconds or more).

With eye contact, there's a three second rule. If you hold someone's gaze for longer than three seconds, you enter a situation known as "kiss or kill". Longer eye contact signals one of two things - either you are attracted to the person or you want to attack them.
They concluded that, on average, it is three seconds long (and no one preferred gazes that lasted longer than nine seconds). Another documented effect of mutual gaze may help explain why that moment of eye contact across a room can sometimes feel so compelling.
And it's true. Eyes are considered to be the best way to relay your feelings for a person. Many say, that one look is enough to know whether you're in love or not. Eyes are one of the first things a person notices about someone, so, it makes complete sense when we say eye contact leads to an array of love affairs.
Intense eye contact, especially with a smile, may mean the person has a crush on you. Pupil size increases means the person likes what he/she sees. Glistening eyes can signify strong attraction and perhaps even love.
How long is flirty eye contact? Eye contact that lasts beyond 4-5 seconds can show a person's interest in you and may be perceived as flirty eye contact. To be more sure if the person is really into you, try to find any other cues besides just eye contact that would strengthen your assumption.
Look away every 3-5 seconds
Holding someone's gaze for too long can make them feel uneasy or awkward. As a general rule, try to break eye contact by averting your gaze down or to the side every 3-5 seconds, unless the conversation is very important, sensitive, or intense in nature.
If you notice he is making more eye contact with you or you catch a guy staring at you, he is probably attracted to you. He may be enthralled by your good looks and may be fantasizing about kissing you. Perhaps he stares at you and smiles; that could mean he likes you, too.
Prolonged eye contact may indicate different emotions. A romantic or attractive gaze can be gentle and often lasts a few seconds, and an aggressive gaze can be longer. You may look for facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice to understand the meaning of gaze when you are unsure.
The Gaze is the last level that can occur unconsciously although it's usually conscious. This is when someone looks at you and just keeps looking at you past the normal “look away” moment. This is a solid 2-3 seconds of eye contact without them breaking it.
Spending long periods looking at a screen can strain the eyes. Using the 20-20-20 rule can help to prevent this problem. For every 20 minutes a person looks at a screen, they should look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
“Deep eye contact, or holding your gaze for at least four seconds, may indicate feelings of love.” Bonus points if they smile in your presence, too.
If you hold prolonged eye contact while having a conversation with someone or even catch someone's eyes across the room, it can create a lot of chemistry, or you can feel a small connection with them. Therefore it makes sense that if you can maintain eye contact with someone, they are likely attracted to you.
A guy might be avoiding looking directly into your eyes because he has a major crush on you, or in fact, might as well be in love with you. It's one of the signs he finds you irresistible. As we are aware, men are not the best at expressing their feelings. And so, the easiest way out is to hide them.
Eye contact is a subtle but strong sign. If she holds eye contact with you, that could be a sign she's interested. Let's say you're in a social setting and a woman across the room looks at you. If she looks at you and then instantly turns away, it may be because she is shy or doesn't want to get caught looking at you.

If he likes you, he'll try to catch your eye every time he sees you. He'll maintain eye contact every time you speak to each other. He's letting you know that you have his attention and that he's interested in what you want to say.
If she's giving you a friendly look or watching you do something fun, staring might be a sign that she wants to be friends. If she's gazing deep into your eyes while smiling and/or initiating touch, she may have a crush on you. If she's glaring at you, she could be mad at you or someone else in her life.
If you've ever struggled to hold another person's stare for more than a few seconds at a time, you're not alone. A recent study, published in Royal Society Open Science has determined that the “preferred gaze” is 3.3 seconds.
According to Navarro, these usually suggest something is amiss. The flutters could also show that someone can't believe what they've just seen or heard, and is struggling to understand and respond. You can also tell someone is feeling stressed or hiding something if their eye twitches.
This is a little bit refreshing: A study of 1,000 men found that 70% look at a woman's eyes when judging a first impression. This was followed closely by her smile and–unsurprisingly–her breasts.
