Adults and children 2-12 years: 1 Vermox tablet (100 mg) or 5 mL of suspension (100mg) is administered in the morning and evening for three consecutive days. If the patient is not cured three weeks after treatment, a second course of treatment is advised.
Use this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, and do not use it for a longer time than your doctor ordered. To do so may increase the chance of side effects.
A doctor or pharmacist may advise you to take mebendazole again after 2 weeks, to stop the worms from coming back.
For most people, treatment will involve taking a single dose of a medication called mebendazole to kill the worms. If necessary, another dose can be taken after 2 weeks.
Take one tablet twice daily (i.e. morning and evening) for three consecutive days. Your doctor will advise the appropriate dose depending on the type of worm infection. If anyone takes too many Vermox Tablets, contact a doctor or your nearest Accident & Emergency department taking this leaflet and pack with you.
VERMOX kills adult threadworms with one dose. VERMOX can also treat infections with hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm, but you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking VERMOX for these worm infections.
When infected with worms, it should be dewormed periodically, for adults and children over 2 years old should be dewormed 2 to 3 times a year, ie every 4 to 6 months.
Puppies should be wormed every two weeks until twelve weeks of age, then monthly until six months of age. Once they have reached six months of age, a puppy can transfer onto an 'adult' worming schedule. All adult dogs need to be wormed every three months for effective protection.
The initial treatment of threadworms is essential, but leaving it there may be leaving the job unfinished! Threadworm eggs, laid around the anus, are untouched by treatments such as COMBANTRIN® or COMBANTRIN®-1 – and these eggs can hatch after the initial treatment, causing the infection to flare up all over again.
Be aware: You can worm your dog too often
And it has no obvious benefit. In fact, over-worming your dog can actually backfire, and make your dog build up a tolerance – you most certainly don't want that.
Can you deworm every month? Deworming every month is not necessary. Once a year is more than sufficient.
The Deworming Process after a Few Days
You may be surprised to still see live worms in your dog's feces after deworming them, but this is normal. While this can be an unpleasant image, it's actually a good thing — it means the worms are no longer living inside your dog!
What happens if I overdose on Mebendazole (Vermox)? Overdose symptoms may include upper stomach pain, loss of appetite, dark urine, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
Deworming programmes only rely on one drug
Deworming programmes are currently relying on just two drugs namely, albendazole or mebendazole. Both these drugs work in the same way. Therefore if the worms develop a resistance to one it's likely they'll also be resistant to the other.
You'll likely need to give your doctor a stool sample for a few months to make sure all the worms are gone. It's harder to treat an infection caused by tapeworm cysts. In addition to the medicine that kills the tapeworm, you may need medicine to reduce inflammation or other symptoms, like seizures, that you're having.
Eggs can pass to other people when they touch these surfaces and then touch their mouth. They take around 2 weeks to hatch. Children can get threadworms again after they've been treated for them if they get the eggs in their mouth. This is why it's important to encourage children to wash their hands regularly.
But it is also often forgotten that a second dose must be administered 15 days after the first one; otherwise, the deworming will prove ineffective.
Fenbendazole (Panacur®) – effective against roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, some tapeworms (Taenia) and Giardia. Must be given for at least 3 consecutive days in order to effectively treat whipworms and tapeworms, and 5 days for Giardia.
Worms are a very common source of illness for both adults and children, so experts recommend that deworming should be done two times a year, or every six months, beginning at the age of two years. Deworming is the process of eliminating intestinal parasites, such as worms, using medication.
It is recommend to deworm your dogs once monthly. Most dewormers for dogs are very safe and do not have much impact on the system other than to do their job and make sure the dog doesn't have worms.
To treat pinworms, adults and children greater than 2 years old should take 1 tablet on the first day, then 1 tablet 2 weeks later and a third tablet 4 weeks after the first tablet.
In some patients, infections may return after treatment with mebendazole. To help prevent the infection from coming back: Wash hands and fingernails often, especially before eating and after using the toilet. Wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly.
The dead worms are then excreted from the gut in the stools. Although mebendazole kills the adult worms it doesn't kill their eggs, so it's really important to be very thorough with hygiene, even after you've taken the treatment. This will help avoid you swallowing eggs which will then cause a new infection.
A single dose of VERMOX® 500 mg may not be sufficient to cure infestations with hookworm and whipworm (Trichuris) although a substantial reduction in egg count can be expected. A second course of treatment should be given to those patients who are still infected three to four weeks after the first course.
