Cotton prices have ranged from AUD $300 to more than $600/bale.
The average price received by farmers for Upland cotton in July was 91.30 cents per pound in the 2021-2022 marketing year. The 2020-2021 marketing year average price was 66.30 cents, compared to the 2019-2020 marketing year of 59.60 cents, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, USDA.
The gins separate cottonseed and trash from the lint or raw cotton fiber. An Australian cotton bale weighs 227kg (500 pounds) and this is converted to U.S. bales (480 pounds).

Each plant produces around 300 to 350 grammes per season, from up to 100 bolls per plant. That means you need two plants to have enough cotton to make the denim needed for an average pair of five-pocket jeans.
Cotton comes from a plant
Cotton fibers come from cotton plants. Specifically, they grow from the seed coat—the outer layer of the cotton plant's seeds. Before they can be turned into sheets or t-shirts, the cotton seeds must first be separated from the plant, and then the fibers from the seeds.
