Particularly eye-catching, the latest $2 offering is extremely collectable as it commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Australian Aboriginal Flag – an official flag of Australia and a symbol of pride and unity for our First Nations People.
The $2 coin and beyond
On June 20 of that year, the Royal Australian Mint released the $2 featuring the portrait Tjungurrayi. The coin's design, inspired by a portrait of Tjungurrayi by artist Ainslie Roberts is said to represent "an archetype" of an Aboriginal Elder.
Or Why is the 1988 $2 coin rare? The reality is that these coins are worth…. $2! They have no value over their face value and anyone who tries to sell them to you for more than that is scamming you and should be avoided like the plague.
“Now the sets are being valued at $6,000. “It's purely down for people's attraction to the $2 Mars coin. To see its value increase nearly 30 fold in five years is beyond ridiculous.”
It's important to realise that some coloured $2 coins have some value. At the time of writing, I would consider the 2012 Red Poppy, 2013 Coronation and 2014 Green Dove coloured $2 coins to have some value.
"The 1930 penny is considered a numismatic superstar, with its value only rising and its significance deeply established in Australian history, a once by-product of economic depression is now a symbol of prosperity, the ultimate cherry on top for any coin collector," Mr Hames said.
The $2 coin is made of 92% copper, 6% aluminium and 2% nickel. It is circular in shape, and has an interrupted milled edge.
Australia's rarest one dollar coin is the 2000 $1/10c mule - this is the one to look for! A few years ago, a mint condition example sold at auction for more than $10,000.
A $2 coloured Red Poppy coin with a red poppy on it is now selling for between $150 to $370. An uncirculated Red Poppy is currently on sale on eBay for $850. Whether it sells for that amount is another matter. And the purple 60-year coronation coin from 2013 has jumped up in value to between $75 and $180.
1988 $2 Coin - Lamination Peel
This lamination error has caused a crack to continue up through the crown. It continues in the opposite direction to crack over Her Majesty's cheek and out her mouth; across through to the lettering on the rim of the coin.
The symbol represents the initials of Horst Hahne, the Royal Australian Mint chief engraver at the time the coins were first introduced. Coin experts have long maintained that coins with this stamp are not valuable given that around 200 million coins were minted with the “HH” symbol.
According to the experts, the rarest £2 pieces are from the 2002 Commonwealth Games collection created to mark the games hosted in Manchester 21 years ago, which all feature the same design of a runner with a flag on their reverse side.
A coin is usually deemed rare if it has a unique design or a low mintage figure, the amount that were produced and put into circulation. As it stands, there are 55 different £2 coin designs currently in circulation and they can can fetch as much as £53, if in the right condition.
A money expert has revealed a tiny detail on a gold $2 coin dating back 10 years that can be worth a fortune today. Commerce teacher Joel Kandiah, otherwise known as The History of Money on TikTok, said a 2012 gold coin featuring a red poppy can be worth as much as $180.
At the time of writing, one of the 60,000 uncirculated coins was selling for as high as A$36 – but that's not the only sting in the tail of this commemorative release.
Mr Stuart Devlin was commissioned to design the reverse of the new coin. The five kangaroos design was chosen from submissions received from the designer. This denomination has since been used for commemorative designs.
Due to the low mintage, the 1972 five cent coin is very sought after (even in used condition) and can be worth over $100 in mint condition.
The 1966 one cent made by the Royal Mint Perth branch is probably the most valuable 1 cent coin from Australia, while the 1966 Royal Mint Melbourne branch 1 cent is also popular with collectors when in mint condition. The 1968 one cent coin is another one to look for in mint condition.
A list of valuable 50c Australian coins is fairly short - most are only worth their face value unless they are in premium grade. One of the first 50 cent piece designs that many people notice in their change are the fifty cent coins struck for the Centenary of Federation - there is one for each state and territory.
“The 2013 Purple Coronation $2 coin has a mintage of 995,000 and in the last week its value has shot up to $75 to $180. “The coin collecting market is absolutely crazy right now!” Kandiah said it's hard to know how much the coins' values will rise to, but says he says it's likely to keep growing.
With a slightly higher mintage of 995,000, the value of the 2013 Purple Coronation $2 coin has has shot up to $75 to $180. "The coin collecting market is absolutely crazy right now," Mr Kandiah said. A search on eBay reveals shows a number of Red Poppy coins are on the market, with some people asking up to $750.
