Mateo Villanueva came from a family of riches from Venezuelan oil. He and his brothers fought about the family wealth and Mateo gave it all up and decided to move to the US, as it was the wish of his wife, Alba Villanueva. Mateo worked very hard to provide for his family and, sadly, died at the young age of 43.
Gina Rodriguez as Jane Gloriana Villanueva, a 23-year-old, religious Latina virgin who becomes pregnant after being artificially inseminated by mistake. At the time she was dating Michael Cordero, a Miami police officer.
Rafael is a 31-year-old ex-owner of the Marbella Hotel and the biological father of Jane's child who has fallen out of love with his wife.
His wife has just started nursing school. One daughter is soon to be walking and the other just found out that Mateo is officially her biological son.
When the promotional poster for the season was first released, it was revealed that the character of Mateo was recast with Elias Janssen due to previous child actor Joseph Sanders being too busy with school to commit to the role.

In season five Jane's son Mateo is diagnosed with ADHD and the writers used the most basic negative stereotypes. He's disruptive, even violent, hyperactive, his struggles are always completely public. It's clearly only seen as a negative.
There was a possibility that the Narrator would be a character who had died. However, as some theorized, the Narrator has been revealed to be Mateo Villanueva due to the fact that the narrator says he loves Xiomara very much.

A self-involved, famous telenovela star and Jane's biological father. He is trying to gain a relationship with his newly discovered daughter. He also has feelings for Xiomara, who was his girlfriend in high school. He marries Xiomara in the season three finale.

However, in the season 4 finale, Jane Ramos becomes furious and breaks up with Petra after finding out she lied about her involvement in Anežka's death to protect her daughters Anna and Ellie.
Petra is touched when Anežka makes a speech about what a great mother she is, something she is very insecure about, and hugs her sister. However, in a sick twist, Anežka betrays Petra's trust and poisons her, leaving her paralyzed and taking over her life.
