Direct current voltage is what comes out of batteries. The battery is at 9V, and it pretty much keeps that voltage constant, until it dies. The chemical reactions inside the battery creates DC voltage.
The 9V (nine volt) battery is a rectangular dry cell classified by its 48.5mm x 26.5mm x 17.5mm dimensions and one-sided clasp terminals. They hold mid-range capacities upwards of 1,200mAh and were often used in radios, but today are used more for walkie-talkies, clocks, smoke detectors, and house alarms.

The 9V battery is an extremely common battery that was first used in transistor radios. In principle, it's probably possible to run a 12V motor on 9V -- it'll just run slower and with much less torque. But if by "a 9V battery" you mean a typical PP3 size battery (i.e, the rectangular ones with a snap connector on top), the answer is almost certainly "no".

Unlikely, especially as your FX unit accepted a 9v -18v DC input. 9v AC peaks around 12.7v, so the extra voltage provided will be OK with the unit's rating. As you found out, it just doesn't work very well. Reliably fallible.
Then use DC to AC inverter. You have to design the circuit to get desired power from AC . You can connect the 9V DC output to a motor which drives an alternator generating 9V or 12V. No transformer required though much more space and components will be required.

However, there is not much difference between 9V and 12V. It does not take much current to be drawn from the battery before it drops 2V at its terminals. A small mount of extra drop in the wiring and the internal 9V supply drops. After that, the available current from the controller drops quite quickly!

There are ways to do it even with a 5V charger, however, you'll be able to charge it only up to 5 volts. Similarly, you can charge a 9V battery with a 12V charger, and we show it in more detail below with Lithium-ion and NiMH batteries .

It's not going to work right. To charge something you need appropriate voltage. A 12v battery have a real voltage of 12.6–12.7 volts when fully charged. To get there your charger must be higher than that, usually 13 volts or 13.4 volts, so the excess pushes ions in the right direction, or charge the battery.

So, is a car battery AC or DC? All batteries operate using direct current, and this principle applies to the lithium-ion batteries that power everything from your computer to your camera. It also applies to the battery that powers your car, which is most definitely DC.

Re: Can you plug 12v ac into a 9v pedal? Not a good idea. You will be making the power regulator in the unit to dissipate a lot more heat, and it may not be capable of doing that.
Install the smaller resistor first, stepping down your voltage from 12V to 11V. Once you've added the first resistor to your circuit, install the larger resistor to step the voltage down again. This resistor will take the remaining 11V current and reduce it to the 9V output you desire.
