The scabies mite has eight legs, is whitish-brown in color, and is nearly invisible to the naked eye. The symptoms of scabies are caused by the female mites, which tunnel into the skin after being fertilized.
The scabies mite is 0.3 mm in diameter—too small to see with the naked eye—and cannot fly or jump. The average host carries 20 mites; however, in cases of crusted (Norwegian) scabies, as seen in some patients with low socioeconomic status or immunocompromised patients, there can be more than a million mites.
Rash: Many people get the scabies rash. This rash causes little bumps that often form a line. The bumps can look like hives, tiny bites, knots under the skin, or pimples. Some people develop scaly patches that look like eczema.
Scabies mites can be seen with a magnifying glass or microscope. The scabies mites crawl but are unable to fly or jump. They are immobile at temperatures below 20º C, although they may survive for prolonged periods at these temperatures. Scabies infestation occurs worldwide and is very common.
What does scabies look like? The scabies rash takes the form of small, red bumps that may look like pimples, bug bites, hives or knots under the skin. You might be able to see the burrow tracks created by the mites, which appear as raised lines of tiny blisters or bumps.
Scabies typically starts with itching and a pimple-like rash, often in areas around your wrists, finger webs, elbows, armpits, waist, knees, ankles, or groin.
Unfortunately, in practice, scabies is largely diagnosed based only on the clinical picture, which may lead to a misdiagnosis. A broad differential diagnosis of scabies can include atopic dermatitis (AD), allergic contact dermatitis, nummular eczema, arthropod bites, dermatitis herpetiformis, etc. (1, 7).
Bed bugs feed on both human and animal blood , and scabies mites only survive on human skin. Bed bugs are about the size of a poppy seed, and people can see them without a microscope. However, individuals cannot see scabies mites using the naked eye.
Check if it's scabies
The spots may look red. They are more difficult to see on dark skin, but you should be able to feel them. Tiny mites lay eggs in the skin, leaving lines with a dot at one end. The rash can appear anywhere, but it often starts between the fingers.
Exposure to mites can lead to patches of small, red bumps on the skin accompanied by the following respiratory symptoms: nasal congestion and sneezing. itchy, red, or watery eyes. itchy nose, mouth, or throat.
How long does it take before a person with scabies has symptoms? In people that have never been infested with scabies before, symptoms (like itching and redness of the skin) usually appear 2 to 6 weeks after coming in contact with someone who has scabies and becoming infested.
The rash from eczema and scabies can look alike, but they have very different causes and treatments. Scabies comes from a mite that burrows into the skin, and it's very contagious. Eczema is a chronic condition that can't spread from person to person. Treatment is important for both eczema and scabies.
If you have a scabies infestation, you should treat all clothing, furniture, and household items you came into contact with over the past few days. Scabies mites can live on your mattress for three days, so sleeping on it before you treat yourself and the mattress could lead to reinfection.
The most common symptoms of scabies are intense itching and a pimple-like skin rash. The scabies mite usually is spread by direct, prolonged, skin-to-skin contact with a person who has scabies. Scabies occurs worldwide and affects people of all races and social classes.
Intense itching and many small, red bumps, like pimples, are seen. Burrows may also be seen. These look like thin, wavy lines.
Items such as bedding, clothing, and towels used by a person with scabies can be decontaminated by machine-washing in hot water and drying using the hot cycle or by dry-cleaning. Items that cannot be washed or dry-cleaned can be decontaminated by removing from any body contact for at least 72 hours.
However, the tell-tale lesion of scabies is the burrow, which is small and often difficult to see. Typically, a burrow appears as a small, thread-like, scaly line (3–10 mm long), sometimes with a tiny black speck (the burrowing mite) at one end.
Items like bedding, clothing, and towels used by an infested person can be cleaned by washing with hot water and drying on high heat. For items that cannot be washed, store in a sealed plastic bag for at least 72 hours to kill any mites. Vacuum and clean rooms and furniture used by the person with scabies.
Can I test myself at home for scabies? There is no self-test for scabies. You can become familiar enough with the physical symptoms to suspect you've been infected with the mites that cause scabies, but you can't know for sure without being diagnosed by a healthcare provider.

Scabies is highly contagious and is spread by close contact. If untreated, it can last indefinitely. Scabies is not caused by poor hygiene.
The rash spreads slowly over a period of weeks or months. In addition to the rash, signs and symptoms of scabies include: Intense itching, which is worse at night and could make it hard to sleep. Bumps that sometimes become infected as a result of scratching.
Severe itching (pruritus), especially at night, is the earliest and most common symptom of scabies. A pimple-like (papular) itchy (pruritic) “scabies rash” is also common. Itching and rash may affect much of the body or be limited to common sites such as: Between the fingers.
