Repairing a hernia is major surgery. And like so many other types of surgery, hernia repairs have gotten much better for patients over the years, says Leon Clarke, MD, a general surgeon at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital.
Fullington perform (for inguinal, umbilical, and small incisional hernias) is about 2 weeks. Many patients feel well enough to perform normal daily activities – including driving and return to work – after only a couple of days, but we restrict patient activity for 2 weeks to allow for adequate healing.
Typically, the hardest part about hernia surgery recovery, is the discomfort within the first 48 hours after surgery. By the third day after surgery, pain and discomfort will usually begin to improve.
Many women suffer a mesh removal nightmare when things have gone wrong and they're unable to access proper help and support to aid their recovery or manage their symptoms. In some cases, mesh removal surgery simply won't work as the devices are intended to be permanent.
The overwhelming majority of mesh, tack, and suture implants used to repair hernias do not cause any harm, pain, or injury. However, when these implants are related to the pain cause, it may be necessary to remove them.
After hernia mesh surgery, most patients can go home the same day. Full recovery may take four to six weeks. Elderly patients who undergo laparoscopic surgery may recover sooner. Patients should perform only necessary functions right after surgery, but can resume light activity after a few weeks.
Patients are counseled that they will likely lose 10–15 pounds during the first 4–6 weeks after surgery before the nadir of weight loss (2).
