So what product should you use? You may have heard some rumours that Bepanthen shouldn't be used on new tattoos, but this absolutely isn't the case. Bepanthen is by far one of the most highly recommended tattoo aftercare products and is the go-to ointment for most tattoo artists and studios.
Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment such as Bacitracin™ Zinc Oxide ointment, Neosporin™ or Vitamin A&D ointment. After 5 days, substitute a gentle fragrance-free and color-free body lotion. Repeat the above washing/ointment procedure at least 3 times a day for 1–2 weeks.
The formula with Pro-vitamin B5 creates a waterproof and breathable protective layer that provides the moisture level needed to help the skin to regenerate from within and to stabilise the natural skin barrier function.
Wash it and pat it dry with a clean towel and then apply the Bepanthen. Put a thin layer of it over the tattoo – by thin I mean so you can still see the colour of the tattoo. After that, wrap it again with cling film. Repeat this twice a day for the next three days, every morning and night.

The two most widely administered antiseptic surgical scrub agents in dermatologic surgery are chlorhexidine and povidone-iodine. Povidone-iodine scrubs are composed of 7.5% to 10.0% povidone-iodine, typically in an aqueous or alcohol base, and are occasionally combined with detergent.
Antibiotic ointments, such as NEOSPORIN® Original Ointment, can be applied to the wound for 24-hour infection protection. Similarly, SIMPLY NEOSPORIN™ uses only three ingredients – bacitracin zinc, polymyxin B sulfate and petrolatum – to help prevent infection in minor cuts, scrapes, wounds and burns.
Povidone‐iodine has been FDA approved for short‐term treatment of superficial and acute wounds.
