Taking Buscopan may help with cramping abdominal pain. Antibiotics have now been demonstrated to be unnecessary for most patients with diverticulitis. If your doctor does decide to give you a course of antibiotics you will be given a script. A normal diet is recommended when you have mild diverticulitis.
Antispasmodic drugs may be used when the pain from cramps is present. The commonly used antispasmodics are Colofac (merbeverine), Buscopan (hyoscine N-butylbromide), or Merbentyl (dicyclomine).
A high-fibre diet can often ease symptoms of diverticular disease, and paracetamol can be used to relieve pain – other painkillers such as aspirin or ibuprofen are not recommended for regular use, as they can cause stomach upsets.
For complicated cases of diverticulitis in hospitalized patients, carbapenems are the most effective empiric therapy because of increasing bacterial resistance to other regimens. Potential regimens include the following: Ciprofloxacin plus metronidazole. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole plus metronidazole.
Certain medications.
Several drugs are associated with an increased risk of diverticulitis, including steroids, opioids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) and naproxen sodium (Aleve).
Try a liquid diet
A doctor may recommend a temporary liquid diet to someone experiencing a flare-up of symptoms. Some foods and drinks that people can prepare at home for a liquid diet include: water, coffee, and tea without milk. strained fruit juices with no pulp, such as white grape or apple juice.
In about 95 out of 100 people, uncomplicated diverticulitis goes away on its own within a week. In about 5 out of 100 people, the symptoms stay and treatment is needed.
Diverticulitis can cause symptoms including abdominal pain. One of the most common diverticulitis symptoms is abdominal pain on your lower left or right side. Diverticulitis pain can get worse when you sleep or exercise. The pain might be managed with changes in diet and medications.

Diverticulitis shouldn't affect your overall life expectancy. Only in the unlikely event of a bowel perforation or a ruptured abscess would you be at risk of life-threatening complications.
