The coldest temperature recorded in Canada is -63°C. I've lived in both countries. At present, in Australia, we've had plus 40°C degree weather while Alberta, Canada is beyond cold at (plus) -40°C. Canada gets colder.
The coldest country in the world is Canada (in terms of average temperature). The lowest temperature ever recorded was -81.4°F (-63°C) in the Yukon Territory in 1947. Fortunately, the average sits at 20.55°F (-6.36°C), which seems positively toasty compared to that record low of -17.18°C.
1) Eastern Antarctic Plateau, Antarctica (-94°C)
The Eastern Antarctic Plateau claims the title of coldest place on Earth. Between 2004 and 2016, satellite data collected across Dome Argus and Dome Fuji, an area around the size of Australia, suggest that air temperatures could be around -94°C.
Both are very big countries where the weather can vary depending on where you are and what time of year it is, so neither one can be said to just objectively have “better weather” than the other across the board.
It can be Harshly Cold in Canada, and it can be Harshly Hot in Australia, but it depends on the exact location, and it may only be for a short time.
By almost any metric, Australia is economically superior to Canada and is, to boot, a social democracy with the same health and social benefits for its people. GDP per capita in Canada was US$48,720 in 2022 compared with Australia's US$52,680.
Canada has one of the most severe winter climates of any country in the world. Canadians across the country may face severe cold weather conditions that can affect their health.
A fleece neck warmer to pull up and over your cheeks on the coldest days. A thick pair of gloves. Ice cleats to pull over your boots on slippery days. A warm hat — or toque — that can be pulled over your ears and forehead; or a woolen headband if you have thick hair.
Canadian winters can be freezing cold. Temperatures throughout winter are usually below or around zero degrees Celsius, and tend to linger between -5 and -15 degrees Celsius. It rarely gets below -20 or -30 degrees Celsius, but it does happen. Heavy snowfall is common in November and December.
In line with data from the Commonwealth Fund report, Canada outperforms Australia in certain areas of preventive care. In this section, we outline three factors where there is significant policy and structural difference between Canada and Australia: PHI, the role of the central government, and pharmaceutical policy.
Canada is 6.1% cheaper than Australia.
Based on internationally comparable data, Australia currently enjoys a four percentage-point advantage over Canada in both the level of productivity—that is, the level of goods and services produced (output produced per hour worked)—and average income, as measured by per-person gross domestic product (GDP).
On the east and west coasts, average high temperatures are generally in the low 20s °C (70s °F), while between the coasts, the average summer high temperature ranges from 25 to 30 °C (77 to 86 °F), with temperatures in some interior locations occasionally exceeding 40 °C (104 °F).
Because Australia is a medium-sized continent, separated from polar regions by the Southern Ocean, it is not subject to movements of frigid polar air during winter, of the type that sweep over the continents in the northern hemisphere during their winter.
Australia is warmer than New Zealand, with a summer average of 30°C and winter average of 15°C. New Zealand, is a touch cooler, with a summer average around 20 to 25 degrees and a winter average around 12°.
The city of Perth has the best weather/climate in Australia. The city enjoys a temperate Mediterranean climate with hot and dry summers and mild but wet winters. Perth is also the sunniest capital city in Australia and is considered one of the hottest experiencing over 250+ days of sunny blue skies.
Tasmania is Australia's coldest state overall because it is closer to the polar zone compared to the other Australian states and territories, and experiences more frequent bursts of cold Antarctic air. The coldest nights occur when the conditions are clear and calm, especially if there is snow cover.
Spring was the coldest in decades for parts of Australia, a rare feat considering the influence of climate change ensures nearly every season is now warmer than normal. Daytime temperatures were especially low compared to recent years, including the coldest in 30 years for Melbourne, Adelaide, and Canberra.
Summer in Canada
With varying levels of humidity, temperatures range between 59–95°F (15–35°C). The far north is a bit cooler, but also boasts exceptionally long days at the height of summer. Unfortunately, summer is also wildfire season.
The Canadian winter lasts from mid-December to mid-March. It is a great time to enjoy exciting winter activities like snowmobiling and dog sledding. The holiday season (December 20 to January 3) is a very busy time of year because of all the Christmas and New Year's festivities.
Dress in layers
Start with a base layer like thermal leggings and wear snow pants on top of them. Same for your upper body. Wear a base layer, then a t-shirt, a fleece and a coat. The advantage of layers is that it traps the body heat inside and helps you stay warm.
One of the biggest problems that Canadians currently face is the price of housing and the lack of affordable options. Because guess what? Owning your own home is becoming increasingly difficult (read, expensive), especially in major cities like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal.
1) Victoria, BC
Victoria is the capital of British Columbia, and has the distinct honour of being Canada's warmest city.
